Austrian GP win for Alan Jones and Williams
𝗕𝘆 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗵𝗮𝗺 𝗗𝘂𝘅𝗯𝘂𝗿𝘆 @𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗗𝘂𝘅

On this day 1979, Alan Jones won the Austrian Grand Prix for Williams. Held at the Osterreichring, the race is remembered for an excellent duel in the opening stages between Jones and Gilles Villeneuve (Ferrari).

However, Jones soon established a lead which he held to the finish leaving Villeneuve to be challenged by the Renaults of Rene Arnoux – who started from pole position – and Jean Pierre Jabouille who would later retire with clutch failure.

At the chequered flag, Jones was 40 seconds ahead of Villeneuve with Jacques Laffite (Ligier Ford) - who managed to pass Jody Scheckter’s Ferrari which was suffering from fading brakes on the last lap – claiming a place on the podium.

Behind Scheckter came Jones’ teammate, Clay Regazzoni, in fifth place, while Arnoux had to pit for fuel, falling back to sixth to score a championship point. His consolation was the fastest lap set on lap 40 of the 54-lap race.

In what was a race of attrition, notable retirements included both Brabham Alfas of Niki Lauda and Nelson Piquet which experienced engine problems, as well as both Lotus Fords of Mario Andretti and Carlos Reutemann with engine and handling issues respectively.
