On this day in 1978, Niki Lauda won the Swedish Grand Prix in a Brabham BT46B, today known as “the fan car”.

It was the brilliant creation of South African designer Gordon Murray and it caused dissention in the F1 paddock when revealed because the Brabham used a giant fan that sucked the air from beneath the car creating underbody or ground-effect aerodynamics.

The Brabham was powered by a flat-12 Alfa Romeo engine which limited airflow under the car and therefore the efficiency of underbody aero. Murray’s fan car was an ingenious way for the Brabham to compete with Colin Chapman’s Lotus 79, the benchmark car in the era when downforce was key to performance.

After Lauda’s victory, dissention broke out among rival teams claiming the fan gave an unfair advantage. However, the car was deemed legal and Lauda’s win was upheld.

Nevertheless, fan car was withdrawn by Brabham’s owner, Bernie Ecclestone, to avoid a conflict with other teams, whose support he needed as chief executive of the Formula One Constructors Association (FOCA).

The race result saw Riccardo Patrese finish second for the Arrows team with Ronnie Peterson third in a Lotus.

Patrick Tambay (McLaren), Clay Regazzoni (Shadow) and Emerson Fittipaldi (Copersucar Fittipaldi) were the other points scorers.
