Canal+ is discontinuing the African streaming service Showmax due to persistent financial losses and the inability to compete with major platforms like Netflix and Amazon.
Showmax, originally developed by MultiChoice Group, failed to sustain profitability even after being acquired by Canal+ in a $3 billion deal.
Despite a temporary lead in market share over Netflix in 2023, Showmax experienced a significant decline, recording a trading loss of $308 million in 2025.
No job redundancies will result from the closure, as Canal+ offers various transition options to Showmax staff.
