Two questions keep coming up in renewal meetings this year. Finance asks: “Are we still paying for tools nobody touches?” Engineering asks: “Could we build this ourselves now?” Until recently, that second question usually ended quickly. However, in 2026, it sits at the center of the renewal. If the customer can build the visible feature, what is the vendor still being paid to own?

Many vendors are not ready to answer that.

AI has made internal tools easier to build, but it has not removed the cost of supporting, securing, documenting and defending them. A customer can reproduce the dashboard, routing queue or approval form. That does not transfer the operational risk of running it. A renewal now must prove operational accountability: enforceable support, security and compliance evidence on request, indemnification with real dollar limits and a vendor that owns a failure instead of handing it back. Vendors that cannot prove they serve those responsibilities are about to lose renewal meetings they used to win.

This does not threaten enterprise software broadly. It threatens one slice: the narrow workflow tools built around repeatable logic.

For two decades, the bargain for those tools was simple. Custom software costs too much to build, so paying for a subscription was the rational choice. That math built a long tail of mid-tier vendors selling tools nobody loves and everybody renews: internal dashboards, ticket routing, approval forms, onboarding checklists and lightweight compliance trackers.

They exist because building them used to be uneconomical. That’s the condition AI just removed.

“Cheap to build” is not the same as “cheap to trust.” In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, of more than 49,000 developers, 46% said they distrust the accuracy of AI output. A generated tool still carries the review, testing and security work a customer was paying a vendor to absorb.

The question is not whether a customer can build the tool. It is whether the customer wants to own everything that happens after it is built.

That is where renewal pressure lands first. When a finance analyst can have an AI assistant generate a working tool over a weekend, a $40 per-seat subscription doing the same job becomes negotiable. When a compliance lead can stand up an evidence tracker in days, a governance, risk and compliance (GRC) vendor charging $80,000 per year has to defend more than features. SAP’s 2025 analysis of technology leaders found 68% of 140 CIO respondents planning vendor consolidation. Customers are not only cutting unused tools, but also sorting vendors into two piles: those who reduce business risk and those who only add another invoice.

Large platform vendors are better positioned because their contracts often include support, integration, compliance evidence and security commitments.

What a customer signs with them is not a feature set but operational responsibility, support, evidence and the liability structure around the product. AI can generate a feature. It cannot generate the entity that is contractually on the hook when that feature fails.

I see this from the compliance side every week. In public-sector security work, Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program and Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification documentation are as much products as the code. A generated dashboard ships with a git history. It does not ship with the documentation chain, audit history or anyone whose job is to defend it in an assessment. Rebuilding the tool internally does not rebuild any of that. It just moves the responsibility onto the customer’s own staff.

The cost of being wrong is climbing, which is why customers cannot treat accountability as optional. Securities and Exchange Commission rules require public companies to disclose a material cybersecurity incident within four business days of determining it is material.

The European Union AI Act‘s high-risk obligations are moving through their own phased deadlines. Cyber insurers keep tightening the scope of what they will cover. Every one of these shifts costs away from building software and toward being answerable for it.

When a workflow fails, the customer owns the consequence, whether the tool was bought, built or generated over a weekend. The hard part was never writing the code; it’s being the party legally on the hook when the code misbehaves.

So, walk into 2026 renewals with a test. Sort every vendor by asking two questions. What is this vendor contractually responsible for when something fails? And what would land on us if we rebuilt this internally next quarter?

Vendors who clear that bar earn the renewal. Vendors who do not are running an insurance business they have never priced as one, and a customer with a generative AI license has now noticed. That is the gap between what customers should demand and what too many have been getting: a feature set and an invoice.

For two decades, software pricing answered one question: How much does it cost to avoid building this? The 2026 renewal question is sharper: How much risk comes back to us if we build it ourselves?

Owning the failure is the expensive part. Vendors that carry that responsibility will keep their renewals. Vendors that sell only a thin workflow layer will spend the next year explaining why customers should keep buying what they can now build.

The choices Dewi makes will ultimately shape the conclusion of her story. Welcome to New in Edge for developers, a new series featuring recent web platform updates in Microsoft Edge that help web developers build better sites and apps.

In this first edition, we’ll look at CSS gap decorations for styling the space between layout items, the focusgroup attribute for easier keyboard navigation, same-site PWA origin migration for moving an installed web app without disrupting users, and other improvements such as text-fit, flex-wrap: balance, and faster clipboard reads. Style layout gaps

CSS gap decorations let you style the gaps between items in flex, grid, and multi-column layouts directly, without relying on border hacks, pseudo-elements, or extra DOM elements. The new row-rule and extended column-rule properties, as well as the rule shorthand, support colors, patterns, and even the repeat() syntax for rich, consistent designs with minimal CSS.

Improve keyboard accessibility with focusgroup

The focusgroup HTML attribute gives you arrow key navigation for composite widgets, such as toolbars, tabs, or menus, for free. With the focusgroup attribute you get automatic arrow key handling and focus memory, without any custom JavaScript roving tabindex code.

Migrate your PWA to a new origin

You can now seamlessly migrate your Progressive Web App (PWA) to a new, same-site origin, preserving user installations and permissions.

When a user installs a PWA, its identity is bound to its web origin (for example, example.com/app). Previously, changing the origin forced users to manually uninstall and reinstall the app. This is no longer necessary. Now, moving to a new origin such as app.example.com can happen without interruption to your users.

CSS Grid Lanes: space efficient masonry layout

New models and APIs for on-device AI

Our developer preview of the pre-release Aion-1.0-Instruct small language model is now available to use with the Prompt API and Writing Assistance APIs in Microsoft Edge.

Aion-1.0-Instruct is smaller, faster, and more efficient than Phi-4-mini. It also expands support to significantly more devices.

That’s not all, starting with Microsoft Edge Canary or Dev 150, you can now also use the WebSpeech API to convert speech to text by using a local model, rather than a cloud-based solution.

With on-device speech recognition support in Microsoft Edge, you can reduce your web app’s running cost, be network independent, and improve privacy for your users.

News from across the web platform

Beyond individual features, we also want to highlight a few updates from across the web platform and the broader web ecosystem.

Interop 2026 progress

The web moves forward by responding to new end-user and developer needs, and this is therefore a big part of what we do. But we also know that you need stability and consistency to build on. That’s why we’ve been participating in the Interop project for the past five years, working with other browser vendors to identify and fix interoperability issues across browsers.

This work is crucial to ensure that the web remains a healthy ecosystem where developers can build with confidence, and users can access content and applications regardless of their choice of browser.

Interop 2026, the latest round of the project, is now well underway, and we’ve already made significant progress in fixing the issues identified during the planning phase. Between January and June 2026, Microsoft Edge’s test pass rate increased from 77% to 97%, and we’re hard at work on features such as Scoped custom element registries and WebTransport.

Modern web guidance

We’ve partnered with the Google Chrome team to bring Modern Web Guidance to web developers. This ambitious project gives developers AI skills they can use with their AI coding agents, to build better web apps based on best practices under rigorous evals.

It’s summer in the northern hemisphere — a time of beachside vacays, backyard barbecues, dripping ice-cream cones, and, occasionally, tricky conversations.

For many families, the season brings a challenge: balancing your workload with looking after kids who suddenly have a lot of free time. For some young minds, “free time” means “screen time,” and trying to set digital boundaries can cause friction.

To help, we connected with the Head of YouTube Health, Dr. Garth Graham, a father of four who’s deeply involved in the platform’s efforts to support kids’ wellbeing. Below, he shares how he sets rules in his own home, helpful approaches for communicating about screen time, and how our tools can stop you from having to be the bad guy.

Thanks for joining us, doctor. I’ll start with a simple one: Why not just give kids’ free rein? It’s summer, after all. (Can you tell I’m not a parent?)

Dr. Garth: [Laughs] I understand that temptation. But the key issue with screen time is less about quantity and more about the quality. Technology has immense benefits, but to extract them we should work with our children to be deliberate about what they’re watching. Take my eldest son. He’s gained an incredible amount of knowledge watching geography videos on YouTube — now he’s competing in a worldwide geography quiz competition. Intentional viewing can open up a world of experiences to kids.

Of course, summer is a balancing act, and we also want them to balance online and offline activities and build real-world relationships.

Avian Visitors is a lovely project by [Teddy Warner] that uses a Raspberry Pi and microphone to keep track of which birds have been visiting your home, and creates a colorful illustration of recent visitors on top of it all.

It reports on a web interface of its own making, but what really takes things to a new level is an optional, stylish E-Ink panel that shows the last 24 hours’ worth of visitors at a glance in a collage.

The key to identification is BirdNET (GitHub here), a deep learning classifier from Cornell that can reliably identify and classify more than 11,000 species worldwide based on sound alone.

Based on that information, the system pulls bird images from a reference set for the region and creates a collage representing the breadth and frequency of visitors in a single image. The larger the image of a bird, the more frequently it was heard.

That’s a cool project, but [Teddy] took things one step further by setting up a color E-Ink display to show a running summary of all the avian visitors the system identifies. [Teddy] has a knack for leveraging projects into wall-mounted art, as we saw with his generative art wall plotter.

Got ideas of your own? Avian Visitors even has options for sending the latest detection to Home Assistant or over MQTT, allowing automation triggers based on specific bird species. If you decide to try it out and put your own spin on it, be sure to let us know by sending us a tip!

It’s no secret that AI can now produce human-like speech from text, but how realistic can it be? Turns out, very!

Having tested more than 20 AI voice generators, we narrowed down the top 8, based on realism, voice variety, and manual controls.

Overall, it’s a great choice for creators, developers, and businesses that need scalable voice output for podcasts, as well as videos, apps, or accessibility use cases.

At its core is a high-quality text-to-speech engine that delivers natural, emotive voices. It also adjusts tone, speed, and emotion automatically. This makes it easy to create everything from polished narration to more casual, conversational audio.

Async also supports voice cloning and custom voice creation, allowing users to maintain the same voice across episodes or create unique character voices.

I especially like its Studio workspace, which brings everything into one place. Ie., recording, editing, and generating content. Features like transcript-based editing, automatic subtitles, AI dubbing, and short-form clip generation streamline production.
