From an idea to a winning solution.

Forty-eight hours. Countless ideas. Tough decisions. One incredible outcome.

Winning didn't start with writing code.

It started with asking the right questions.

Before a single feature was designed, this team spent time understanding the problem they wanted to solve, breaking it down into smaller challenges, identifying the information they needed, and creating a clear path towards a meaningful solution.

When it came to choosing their challenge, the decision was simple.

They wanted to tackle something with the potential to create real impact.

“We looked at something that many people would be interested in if they had a platform that made farming easier to understand and supported them throughout the entire journey."

That vision led them to develop an AI-powered concept focused on supporting farmers from planning and crop management through to market access.

Of course, no great idea comes without different opinions.

The team shared that one of their biggest strengths was learning to embrace different ways of solving problems.

“We understood that everyone has a different style of solving issues. We made sure everyone had the opportunity to contribute before weighing up the best solution together."

That mindset became one of the defining reasons behind their success.

At Shaper, we believe innovation isn't just measured by the final product.

It's measured by curiosity, collaboration, resilience, and the willingness to solve problems that matter.

Congratulations to our Hack2Hirethon 2026 Champions. Your journey is proof that when purpose meets teamwork, incredible things can grow.

Every innovation starts with someone asking,

“How can we make this better?"

For Team , that question led them to explore how AI could support the everyday realities of running a small business.

As Confidence, a member of Team Spazex, shared, their vision was to create “a smart, digital assistant that sits right in the shop owner's pocket to help them run their business better."

Working from a live industry challenge, the team explored how intelligent technology could simplify daily business operations, reduce uncertainty, and give entrepreneurs greater confidence in the decisions they make.

But what stood out most was the way they thought beyond today's solution.

Confidence explained that the team's vision is to continue evolving the concept with smarter AI capabilities, greater accessibility, and features designed around the real environments in which entrepreneurs operate.

At Shaper, this is what innovation looks like.

It's about taking on real industry challenges, thinking beyond the obvious, and building solutions with the people who will use them in mind.

Congratulations to team on securing 2nd Place at the Shaper Hack2Hirethon 2026. Your journey reminds us that the most impactful ideas don't begin with technology, they begin with understanding people.

Every great innovation begins with a simple question:

"What problem is worth solving?"

At the Shaper Hack2Hirethon 2026, Team Titans chose to tackle one of South Africa's biggest challenges, agriculture and food security.

Their solution? An AI-powered application designed to help farmers make faster, smarter decisions.

By simply scanning a plant or animal with their phone, farmers can identify diseases, receive weather and climate updates, access practical farming advice, and connect with potential markets to sell their produce.

But they didn't stop there.

Their long-term vision is to introduce hydroponic farming education, giving the next generation of farmers access to sustainable, water-efficient farming methods that can improve productivity while protecting valuable resources.

This is what we believe at Shaper.

Learning becomes powerful when it's applied to real-world challenges. By creating opportunities for young innovators to solve meaningful problems, we're not only developing technical skills, we're helping shape solutions that can make a lasting impact.

Congratulations to Team Titans on securing 3rd Place and reminding us that some of the best ideas begin with a desire to make life better for others.

Before a software developer writes a single line of code, they're usually asked to write something else.

A CV.

For decades, it has been one of the most trusted tools in recruitment. It tells us where someone studied, where they've worked, and the skills they believe they possess. Qualifications matter. Experience matters. Interviews matter.

But for careers built on problem-solving, collaboration, and continuous learning, we have to ask an uncomfortable question:

Are we measuring the right things?

Modern software development is rarely a solo pursuit. It requires people who can think critically, communicate clearly, adapt when things don't go to plan, and work through complex challenges alongside others. These aren't just "soft skills"—they're the skills that determine whether great ideas become successful products.

Yet many recruitment processes still ask candidates to prove these abilities before they've ever been given the opportunity to demonstrate them.

That question became the philosophy behind Shaper's Hack 2 Hire.

Rather than asking aspiring developers to describe what they could do, we created an environment where they could show us.

For 48 hours, teams were challenged with solving a real-world business problem under pressure. Employers didn't simply review a finished solution. They watched ideas take shape. They observed how teams approached uncertainty, managed disagreements, responded to setbacks, and turned conversations into working solutions.

What emerged wasn't just technical ability.

We saw leadership appear without anyone assigning it.

We saw quiet thinkers ask the one question that completely changed their team's direction.

We saw individuals who never tried to dominate a conversation become the people everyone naturally turned to when decisions had to be made.

We saw resilience.

We saw curiosity.

We saw collaboration.

None of those moments would have appeared on a CV.

None would have been discovered by keyword filtering.

None would have been revealed by asking, "Tell me about yourself."

And yet, these are often the qualities employers say they value most.

This isn't an argument against CVs or qualifications. They remain an important part of understanding a candidate's journey. But perhaps they shouldn't be the only evidence we rely on when identifying future talent.

Because potential rarely reveals itself on paper.

It reveals itself when people are trusted with real problems, real teammates, real deadlines, and the opportunity to contribute.

The future of hiring may not depend on asking better interview questions.

It may depend on creating better opportunities for people to demonstrate what they're capable of before we decide whether they're worth hiring.

At Shaper, that's the future we're working towards.

Because we don't believe South Africa has a shortage of talented young people.

We believe there are thousands of capable individuals waiting for the opportunity to be seen.

Sometimes, all they need is a chance to prove it.

Some of the biggest breakthroughs begin with one challenge.

This weekend, our learners came together for the Hack2Hirethon, putting their skills to the test through collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.

Watching teams transform ideas into real solutions reminds us why opportunities like these matter. They don't just build technical skills, they build confidence, resilience, and the ability to solve problems that matter.

We're incredibly proud of every learner who participated and grateful to everyone who continues to support the development of South Africa's future tech talent.

The future is looking bright.
