Hexing Electrical South Africa had the honour of welcoming Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa , Minister of Electricity and Energy, to our offices and manufacturing facilities for an official site visit. The Minister was accompanied by a team from the Department of Electricity and Energy.
The visit served as a critical platform to align the Hexing Group’s local manufacturing capabilities with the national government’s pressing agenda to stabilize utility networks and empower local municipalities.
Addressing the delegation and Hexing leadership, Minister Ramokgopa emphasized that the government’s primary role is to create an enabling environment for private enterprises to thrive and innovate. He strongly encouraged businesses in the manufacturing and energy sectors to focus on aggressively growing their workforce, noting that South Africa's energy transition must go hand-in-hand with local job creation and skills transfer.
Crucially, the Minister acknowledged the severe operational and financial challenges currently facing local municipalities. He highlighted that the widespread deployment of smart electricity and water meters is no longer a luxury, but an absolute necessity to protect municipal revenue, reduce distribution losses, and ensure the sustainable delivery of essential services to citizens.
Following the Minister's remarks, the delegation embarked on a comprehensive walkthrough of the Hexing Group’s local facilities to see these solutions in production. The tour included Hexing’s advanced electricity meter manufacturing lines, Z-Link’s water meter manufacturing operations, which provide vital technologies for efficient municipal water management, and Livoltek, where the delegation viewed commercial energy storage containers and smart management solutions for the renewable sector.
Reflecting on the significance of the visit and the company's long-standing commitment to South African municipalities, Hexing Electrical SA’s Sales Director, Faisal Hoosen, drew a direct line from the company's past to the Minister's current mandate.
"When we presented the initial smart metering Proof of Concept to the City of Tshwane back in 2007, we were envisioning an intelligent, responsive grid," he noted. "Today, as the Minister has seen, that vision is a tangible reality rolling off our local production lines. We recognized early on that off-the-shelf global solutions were not enough. South Africa required technology tailored to our unique municipal challenges, backed by local manufacturing and dedicated support."
"The electricity and water meters we are building across the Hexing and Z-Link facilities are more than just measurement devices; they are critical revenue protection tools," Faisal added. "By manufacturing these solutions on South African soil, we are not only ensuring grid compliance and resilience, but we are directly answering the Minister's call to build the skills and create the jobs necessary to power our country's future."
The engagement underscored the critical importance of local manufacturing, innovation, and investment in supporting the growth and transformation of South Africa’s utility sectors.
