Today, 4 May, we recognise International Firefighters’ Day.

We honour the firefighters and first responders who protect lives, property and communities — often in dangerous and unpredictable conditions.

For those of us working in PV safety, today is also a reminder that solar installations must be planned with emergency response in mind. PV systems are safe by design, but during fire, storm damage or electrical fault conditions, the DC side can remain live while exposed to light.

That is why training, site awareness, emergency planning and practical de-energisation solutions are so important.

To every firefighter and first responder: thank you for your service, courage and sacrifice.

DC connector failures remain one of the recognised risk areas in solar PV installations. Possible contributing factors include poor crimping, mismatched connectors, water ingress, UV exposure, heat, movement, ageing components and installation quality.

ArcBox is designed to encapsulate DC connectors and provide an added layer of fire-risk mitigation where connector faults may occur.

For South African conditions, we believe ArcBox is especially relevant for end-of-string / end-of-line DC connector points, and other higher-risk connection areas where field-made or exposed DC connectors are present.
