2020 has been interesting, to put it mildly. After a generally high level of optimism at the beginning of the year - as evidenced by the proliferation of posts on social media - the wheels pretty much came off when news of the pandemic started filtering first out of China and then out of Europe.
Very, very few of us have been able to continue ‘business as usual’.
While Interacc has been able to keep ticking over, we have had to significantly change the way we serve our customers. This has been good practice for the situation we see developing around us, with Covid-19 hot spots exploding in many parts of the country.
I remain optimistic about our general handling of the pandemic, as our death rate stays well below the global average. However, we cannot ignore that South Africa has gone from reporting really low numbers for months, to a situation this last week where, on a ‘cases per million’-basis our total infections rank us 22nd highest in the world(1).
This information against the backdrop of a national easing of lockdown restrictions is worrying. We all realise we cannot keep the economy in lockdown forever, but if we do not work diligently at curbing the spread of the virus even as we try to keep our businesses afloat and eke out a living as efficiently as we can, we are doomed.
In my own little universe, previously all ‘known cases’ were on an anecdotal basis – a friend of a friend who knew someone who is ill or had passed. Over the past month, the virus has moved closer to home. I now have in-laws who have been ill. Fortunately, I have not had contact with them during this time and they also recovered successfully, but this illustrates that Covid-19 is a problem none of us can afford to ignore.
For this reason, InterAcc will continue to assist customers remotely as much as we possibly can.
Where it is imperative that we assist a client on site, we will observe all recommended protocols and we beg you to do the same:
• Wearing a mask while we are in your office
• Washing or sanitizing hands regularly
• Wiping down keyboards, etc. when we arrive & when we leave
• Avoiding physical contact at all costs
We will decline on-site visits if we display symptoms which have any risk of being ‘Covid-19’-related and we urge you to show us the kindness of not asking for an onsite visit if anyone in your office has such symptoms.
We remain, as always, your Partner in Sage.
