How to Uninstall and Block Updates and Drivers on Windows 10

Windows 10 automatically downloads and installs all updates. This includes security updates, feature updates, and driver updates provided through Windows Update. If a driver or update causes problems, you can uninstall it and block Windows from downloading it again.

Microsoft doesn’t provide a way to block updates from within Windows 10, but it does provide a downloadable tool to do this. This effectively allows you to “hide” updates like you could on Windows 7.

View Recently Installed Drivers and Updates

Not sure which device driver or update Windows just installed that might be causing you problems? Open the Settings app and select “Update & security.” Under Windows Update, scroll down and select “Advanced options,” and then select “View your update history.” You’ll see a list of updates installed and the dates they were installed here.

Uninstall a Driver

Drivers can be particularly problematic. If you roll back a driver or install a different one yourself, Windows Update will continue downloading and installing that specific driver over and over, overwriting your preferred driver.

You can, however, roll back an installed driver. You’ll need to block the driver update from being installed via Windows Update after you do this. If you just roll back the installed driver, Windows Update will automatically install that driver again when it checks for updates.

Right-click the Start button at the bottom-left corner of your screen or press Windows Key + X and select Device Manager to launch the Device Manager. Locate the device whose driver you want to uninstall, right-click it, and select Uninstall. Check the “Delete the driver software for this device” option and click OK. Windows will uninstall the device and delete the driver software downloaded from Windows Update. You can install fresh drivers software afterwards.

Uninstall an Update

The option to uninstall Windows Updates (not driver updates) is buried in the Settings app. Open Settings and navigate to Update & security > Windows Update > Advanced options > View your update history. You’ll see a link reading “Uninstall updates” at the top of the update history list.

(In the Windows Insider Preview, there was also a link here for uninstalling the latest build. If Microsoft rolls out a big update to Windows 10 as a “build” again, you might see a link right under “Uninstall updates” for rolling back to an earlier build.)

This link takes you to the “Uninstall an update” dialog, where you can uninstall an individual Windows Update if it’s causing problems on your system.

Disable Automatic Download of Drivers from Windows Update

There’s still a “Never install driver software from Windows Update” option in the final version of Windows 10, buried in the old Control Panel.

Different people report different luck with this option. Some people report that it prevents Windows from overwriting their custom-installed drivers, while others report that Windows continues downloading drivers even after this option is selected. If Windows keeps replacing your own drivers with its own, be sure to try this option.

Depending on how the driver is being installed, it may arrive as an update from Windows Update afterwards. Use the tool below to disable the driver update if this doesn’t help.

To access this option, open the Control Panel by right-clicking the Start button and selecting Control Panel. Navigate to System and Security > System > Advanced system settings. Click the Hardware tab, click Device Installation Settings, and select the “No, let me choose what to do option. Select “Never install driver software from Windows Update.”

Prevent a Driver or Update From Being Installed from Windows Update

Just uninstalling drivers or updates won’t prevent them from being installed again. There’s no way to “hide” an update or block updates from within Windows itself, but Microsoft provides a downloadable tool to do this. It’s intended for temporarily hiding buggy or otherwise problematic while they don’t work properly on your system.

Download and run the “Show or hide updates” troubleshooter for Windows 10 from Microsoft.

When you run this troubleshooter, it will search for available updates and allow you to “hide” them, preventing Windows from automatically installing them. In the future, you can run this troubleshooter again and unhide the updates when you want to install them.

If you want to temporarily prevent Windows from automatically downloading and installing any updates, you can do it without using the above tool to block updates. Just set your current Internet connection as “metered” and Windows won’t download updates while connected to it — at least until you tell Windows the connection isn’t metered anymore.

Popular websites across the world fell prey to a malicious advertising campaign which sent unwitting visitors to the Angler exploit kit which serves TeslaCrypt ransomware.

A number of security firms detected and reported a spike in malicious traffic. Researchers from Trustwave, Malwarebytes and Trend Micro said the spike in malicious traffic impacted a number of high-ranked Alexa websites, and was caused by a malvertising campaign which served malicious adverts to visitors.

The campaign led to the Angler exploit kit, which contained not just ransomware, but also a Trojan used for surveillance and data theft.

The malvertising campaign, whether part of a coordinated effort or the responsibility of one organised fraudster group, reportedly spread across websites belonging to companies including the BBC, The New York Times, AOL, MSN and answers.com.

Trend Micro reports that the campaign may have affected tens of thousands of users within only 24 hours of being live.

Malvertising is the use of malicious adverts to spread malware. Many Internet domains rely on adverts supplied by third-party ad networks in order to generate enough revenue to stay afloat, and unfortunately, sometimes fraudulent and fake adverts slip through the net.

It is important to note that legitimate websites which serve malicious ads are often as much of a victim as their users since they do not have control over these external ad networks.

Either way, though, once a malicious ad is successfully hosted on a legitimate website, it can link to domains controlled by cyberattackers and files such as the Angler exploit kit.

In some cases, simply loading the page is enough for the malicious ad to check for browser vulnerabilities and potentially infect a visitor's system.

The higher the rates of traffic, the more likely the campaign is to be successful and infect systems before removal.

According to Trustwave, the cyberattacker behind this malvertising campaign "acquired an expired domain of a small but probably legitimate advertising company in order to utilize this for malicious purposes," providing them with the avenue to exploit high-ranking websites.

we can't know for sure, it's likely that the people behind this operation are trying to ride on the reputation the domain had and abuse it to trick ad companies into publishing their malicious ads," Trustwave says.

The fraudulent advert used in the campaign contained a heavily-obfuscated JavaScript file with more than 12,000 lines of code -- almost 11,000 more than usual -- which included protections to avoid detection for as long as possible.

The malicious ad attempted to filter out both security researchers and website visitors with antivirus products and patched systems, which would ensure exploit would not be successful.

However, if a visitor was using an unpatched system and has no anti-malware scans running, the victim would be sent to the Angler kit, which contained both the Bedep Trojan and TeslaCrypt ransomware. This exploit kit is the only one currently known to include an exploit for Microsoft's Silverlight vulnerability, which was patched in January this year.

Researchers at Malwarebytes also listed a number of other rogue domains which were serving malware, which may or may not be linked to the main malvertising scheme.

Malvertising campaigns are often quickly detected and pulled, but if you are running a vulnerable browser and happen to visit domains unwittingly serving malicious ads, you may become a victim -- further highlighting how important it is for users to keep their systems up-to-date and pat

5G Technolgy Era

You might think your 4G mobile device is cutting edge, but industry insiders already have their eyes set on the next standard: 5G.

The question is, what will this new standard entail?

Enthusiasts promise all kinds of new options: Using your mobile to pick up a phone call to a landline, or using a tablet to finish a live show you started watching on a TV.

“The customer will be able to seamlessly transition between different communications methods, Mobile networks and landline systems are expected to be ready for it by 2020. “With 5G, a new era will begin.”

Mobile phone users will be able to expect speeds of multiple gigabits per second when surfing, as per head of radio systems at Nokia Networks. That’s a big upgrade from today, where most operators offer speeds of up to 150 megabits per second.

Reaction times will also be upgraded so they take place in a millisecond. Right now, the best operators can only provide speeds between 30 and 100 milliseconds.

“Essentially, you will have no more waiting time.

And, not only will customers like it, such speed is key for future mobile phone business models.

“5G will be a new era for wireless communications, not just in terms of people communicating with one another, but also with devices and machines. One example would be self-driving cars, a technology many enthusiasts see getting closer.

The future should also see one single communications standard, the internet protocol (IP). There will, of course, be efforts to expand the system of cables connecting everything, but the real focus will be on making the network more intelligent.

Software will recognize choke points in the network and route packages through less congested areas.

Enthusiasts also see a future where there are a lot more spots to connect from – whether from a lamppost or inside a home – bringing everyone on the network more closely together.

“We’re expecting a tenfold increase in transmitters. But, at the same time, he doesn’t see any increase – actually a slight decrease – in battery lives and the amount of radiation transmitted by the technology.

Evolution in technology

1. Securing your data
Following a spate of high-level cyber security breaches, including most recently at SONY, leading to a leak of thousands of gigabytes of sensitive documents, consumers will be keen on securing their own personal data. Apple Pay with Touch ID, which links your fingerprint to your ability to access payments, is just one way that this is already happening, according to Juniper Research

2. Smartwatches get smarter
The smartwatch market is now flooded with competition with companies like Apple, HP (HPQ) , Samsung (SSNLF) and others joining a host of smaller competition. As the market matures, it will get smarter and pay more attention to aesthetics, according to Juniper Research.

3. NFC
For several years it has been promised the NFC, or near field communications, would be the wave of the future. Well, this is the year more people will move their connected devices in close proximity to one another to share information, according to Juniper Research

4. Data takes over from voice
There has been a multi-year trend of wireless carriers charging less for voice calls and more for data. This trend will continue, according to Juniper Research

5. Cryptocurrency rises
Bitcoin suffered a setback in 2014 with the shutdown of Mt Gox, an exchange for the currency made of code. But that won't stop the rise of strange, new, similar currencies, according to Juniper Research. PayPal has said that it is experimenting with letting merchants accept Bitcoin in exchange for digital goods.

6. Drones
Civilian drone usage will increase -- for both businesses and consumers -- even as authorities struggle to regulate the new devices, according to Juniper Research

7. Digital health
With more data about our lives available now than ever, and wearable devices and smartphones recording yet more every day, consumers will start to take more control of their own health through the use of data, according to Juniper Research.

8. Budget 'phablets' go global
In the rise of mobile gaming more smartphones, and phablets, become more popular worldwide -- and by this prices for the devices will have to come down, according to Juniper Research.

Microsoft just lifted the veil on Windows 10 (no, not Windows 9) at an event in San Francisco today, and with it, Microsoft hopes to win back the many desktop PC users that Windows 8 alienated in great numbers back when it was released in late 2012.

During the company’s presentation, Microsoft announced that its next OS would get a bunch of new and returning features, including a revamped Start menu, a version of the Cortana voice assistant (which debuted with Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform), a Notifications Center, the ability to run multiple virtual desktops simultaneously, and much more.

Windows 10 has been rumored for months. In recent weeks, multiple leaks of a Technical Preview version of itrevealed that many of the features Microsoft spoke about today would be included in the next iteration of Windows.

Here’s a breakdown of all the new features that are coming with Windows 10, starting with a fresh take on an old favorite. Microsoft demoed Windows 10 at the event, and described the version that was shown as a “very early build.”
We meet again, Start menu

Hello, old friend! The Start menu, which Microsoft did away with in Windows 8, has made a triumphant return in Windows 10. The decision to not include a Start menu (or even the option to re-enable it) in Windows 8 proved to be a huge mistake, and Windows 8’s and 8.1’s consistently paltry adoption numbers served as continuous evidence of that fact. After all, if that was a such a brilliant decision, Microsoft wouldn’t be bringing the Start menu back in the first place.

The new Start menu offers a breed of familiarity that exists on two levels. On one hand, the Windows 10 Start menu offers the ability to find and search through your list of apps, programs, and utilities.

Then, there’s the Windows 8 Metro aspect of the refreshed Start menu, which may turn off some people who found the Windows 8 Start screen experience too jarring. Aesthetically, the Start menu now looks like it’s the offspring of the Start menu from years past, and the tiled Metro UI from Windows 8. To the right of your list of apps and programs, you can add tiled shortcuts to any Windows Metro apps of your choosing. You can also move the tiled shortcuts around at will, and re-size them. If you prefer to have larger icons in the Start menu, the menu itself will expand horizontally in order to fit them.

Some may find this option welcoming, while others just may want to rid their old/new buddy of anything resembling Microsoft’s last attempt at a desktop OS. Thankfully, that’s possible. You can easily swap out the tiled shortcuts to Metro apps for shortcuts to files, classic Windows folders, links to websites, and more.

Searching from the Start menu also makes a return, and gets some boosts in Windows 10 as well. If you want to just search for something by typing, you can do so via a text-based search field in the Start menu’s bottom left corner. As is the case in the Windows 8 Start screen, once you start typing, results will begin to pop up automatically. They’ll also include results that are pulled from the Internet. You can also shut down and restart from the Start menu.
Multiple virtual desktops with Task View

Windows 10 also adds the ability to run multiple desktops on the same PC via a feature called Task View.

After opening Task View, all you have to do to open a new desktop is click a black rectangle with a plus sign over it. Once you have more desktops open, they’ll appear as individual tiles at the bottom of your screen, oriented in horizontal fashion. You can also pull apps that are open in one virtual desktop over to other ones, which is called “Snap Assist.”
