I used to hate creating proposals for clients - I would spend hours putting them together, making sure they looked half-decent, then sending that PDF attachment.

It felt clumsy, was hard to keep track of in inboxes, and there was no way to know if a potential client even looked at it after all that hard work.

This really happened about 5 years ago, and the conversation was much longer than this - complete with 7-minute voice notes about their 'tough' life situation, and quite a lot of attempted manipulation.

The thing is that creative work is not worth less just because it's creative. And Checkers unfortunately doesn't accept payment in the form of exposure.

About 8 years ago, I accidentally walked in on a discussion between two family members... "When is Steph finally going to get a job? You can't just start a business!" one of them said.

Our company was less than a year old at this point, and it felt like only my mom and I were cheering for it. Salt and Light was still new, but I KNEW it was going places - defeat was not an option.

And it's not like I just woke up one morning and decided to take this risk; I had gone through a nightmarish experience at the last place I worked. It was so bad that I would start panicking at the thought of working for another boss. What made it worse is that I actually did search for another job, but never heard back after sending CVs and interviews.

Years later, those same people who doubted and talked behind our backs say they are proud of us, and knew we'd be a success. Others ask us to employ their children.

So if you are stuck, push past it. If you know nothing about business, there is plenty to learn on YouTube. And if you are the only one cheering for yourself, block out the noise. You're just getting started, babe.

A new client popped up on my WhatsApp, and of course I had to ask how they found us, and they said they asked ChatGPT. Cut to me doing a happy dance because my strategy and hard work are paying off! You won't show up as a recommendation from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini etc. by accident. You need a web designer with a strategy and knowledge of how to make this happen. Getting vulnerable today: not every day is a good day, and that is ok. Honestly, yesterday sucked. I struggled to get out of bed, juggled stress and work, reached for comfort food, and physically couldn't hit my workout goal for the day.

But today is a new day. And I am trying to remind myself that there are a lot of blessings in my life.

We play this game as we drive; we ask the other what they are grateful for today. It was really difficult at first but it gets easier the more you practise. And for real, it changes your perspective and lifts your mood.

Google quietly changed the rules this year, and most business owners have not caught it yet.

It used to hand people a list of links, and they picked yours. Now its AI just answers the question at the top of the page, and most people never click through to anyone's website at all. Nearly 7 in 10 searches now end without a single click.

So here is the shift you need to make: stop chasing the top ranking, and start becoming the business the AI actually names in its answer.

And a word to the wise, do not blindly trust the AI either. It sounds sure of itself. "Sounds" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. Always check the source.
