"Hi, I am Jason Okkers,
I am deaf man aged 37 residing in Bishop Lavis. For many years I grew up playing games, which made me a competitor in fighting video games.
After completing school, I've searched for a job and I never found one. I knew in the employment world, my chances were limited due to the "communication barrier" and unfortunately, many deaf people are left stranded, like me.
I have taught myself how to type to pass the time, reading books to stay educated.
I had a PC before, knowledge of components inside a PC but never took seriously on how to fix my broken-down PC.
I always wished I had knowledge on repairing electronics that can help me to get that broken-down PC back up and running again.
This is one of the reasons I signed up for Computer Tech Support Training through Sampson Legacy. My girlfriend, Lisah has been a follower of YoungPeople@Work for the longest time and recommended the course to me when she saw the post.
I contacted them, explained my communication challenges and I was not turned away because of it.
My first class started 1 August and sofar, I have no regrets. Knowing that I'm teachable no matter what because I never saw a deaf experienced man doing this, so I have to step in and learn to renew my knowledge.
Tech Support can be a great opportunity for me to learn about fixing laptops and PCs and gain understanding on how tech works. I'm willing to work and possibly start making a living for myself. Also I would like to teach deaf people in turn, so they too can pursue a career in technology.
As the old saying goes: Knowledge is Power!
And here's the kicker:
I'm the nephew of Tony Van Der Heever (from Bishop Lavis!). Please tell Frank Julie (founder of YoungPeople @ Work) because they are best friends for over 40 years!
