Turning field data into environmental intelligence

Contour Enviro Group and Grasshopper Green Technologies have jointly developed an interactive analytics dashboard to measure the impact of invasive alien plant clearing in one of the Cape Town catchment areas. This is based on the work that the Group undertakes where more than 300 jobs are created since 2022.

Across the 2024–2025 and 2025–2026 reporting periods, the dashboard analysed:
- 84 clearing projects
- 2,387 hectares treated
- 259.45 condensed hectares cleared
- More than 8,000 person-days of employment created
- An estimated 312.95 million litres in annual water gains attributed to clearing

The dashboard connects ecological impact, species-level clearing data, employment creation, project expenditure and water-security benefits in one decision-support platform.

This is the future of conservation management: transforming operational field data into clear, measurable intelligence that helps organisations understand impact, improve planning and direct resources where they matter most.

Developed jointly by Contour Enviro Group and Grasshopper Green Technologies, with the analytics and dashboard development led by our R&D Department.

Advancing water intelligence in South Africa’s catchments

Since 2024, our team at Contour Enviro Group has been quietly building a Digital Water Calculator a data driven tool designed to measure and visualise water gains achieved through clearing invasive alien plants.

While the calculator hasn’t yet been released publicly, early results from a small sample in the Steenbras Quaternary Catchment (G40A) show encouraging outcomes:
- 312 million litres of potential water gains
- 62 cleared sites across 254 hectares
- 16 invasive species removed

These insights are powered by published methodologies (Le Maitre et al., 2016) and demonstrate how technology can quantify ecological restoration at scale.

We were excited to see WWF-SA and partners recently release their own spreadsheet tool, it’s good to see conservation organisations converging on data led approaches to water security. Collaboration, not competition, will help our sector move faster.

Our next step is refining Contour’s calculator for public and partner use integrating AI, geospatial mapping, and live dashboards for conservation managers.
