iCOMMS South Africa

iCOMMS South Africa Information for Community Services (iCOMMS) is a research team within the Department of Information Systems at The University of Cape Town.

The focus of the team is to understand the use of information systems in the context of planning and delivering services in under-resourced environments. Mobile technologies and ICT4D applications have created an opportunity to improve the ways in which data is collected, information is distributed and workflows are improved in order to increase efficient decision making. The research contribution

lies in developing models for context-based information system design and development with a focus on supporting service delivery and local governance. The software we develop is available open source. UCT does not necessarily agree with or endorse the views and comments posted on this page. The iCOMMS team reserves the right to delete any comments and links that we deem inappropriate.

We have moved away from a technicist ICT4D approach - that does not work. Our operational model is more holistic and transdisciplinary in nature - not easy but feasible.Incorporating advocacy and social justice is fundamental - but sometimes the context is not ready for that too
