🇿🇦 Honouring the Women of 1956
This Women’s Day, TimeWorks Point of Sale honours the courage and sacrifice of Rahima Moosa, Lillian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph and Sophia Williams-De Bruyn — the four women who led one of the most powerful demonstrations in South African history.
On 9 August 1956, more than 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against apartheid pass laws and demand freedom, dignity and equality.
They came from different backgrounds, but stood together with one powerful message: women would not remain silent in the face of injustice.
Rahima Moosa, a trade unionist and activist, stood among these women despite being pregnant at the time. Her courage, together with that of her fellow activists and the thousands who marched alongside them, became an enduring symbol of the strength of South African women.
Today, we remember the 20,000 women who marched, honour the women who led them, and celebrate the generations of women who continue to build our country.
Their courage helped change South Africa. Their legacy continues to inspire us.
