Retailers spend millions attracting customers into their stores, through advertising, promotions, loyalty programmes, and in-store experiences.

But what happens at the point of payment can determine whether that investment pays off.

Retail success is often decided long before a customer reaches the checkout, but the final stretch remains one of the most critical parts of the entire journey.

The “last metre” to the till is where intention becomes action, and where friction, delays, or uncertainty can directly impact conversion.

Dieter Oelofse, our POS Systems Architect, and Shaun Shehab, our Head of Pre-Sales explore why this final step in the retail journey carries so much weight, and what it takes to get it right on here: https://www.bizcommunity.com/article/the-most-expensive-metre-in-retail-is-the-one-that-leads-to-the-till-731792a

There are three questions that preoccupy South Africa’s retailers in 2026. How do you get customers through the door, how do you keep them there, and how do you persuade them to spend?

South Africa’s digital wallet market is expanding quickly, but growth is not only driven by demand.

Behind the scenes, licensing requirements play a major role in how quickly new payment solutions can be launched, scaled, and integrated into existing financial systems.

Paul Wenborn, our Product Manager, and Yaaseen Sheik, our Company Counsel unpack this in detail here: https://it-online.co.za/2026/06/17/sas-digital-wallet-goldrush-has-a-licensing-problem/

South Africa’s prepaid card and digital wallet market is valued at $13,5-billion as of 2026, with an anticipated compound annual growth rate of 11,9%, reaching $21,2-billion by 2030. Digital wallets have the potential to make payments faster, and more accessible, and convenient. But sustainable growth requires more than technology alone.

The future of digital payments depends on the right balance between innovation, regulation, trust, and interoperability. Without it, scaling new payment solutions becomes increasingly difficult.

Paul Wenborn, our Product Manager, and Yaaseen Sheik, our Company Counsel, explore why licensing has become a key consideration in South Africa's evolving digital payments landscape here: https://www.smetechguru.co.za/south-africas-digital-wallet-goldrush-has-a-licensing-problem/

Alternative payment methods are arriving faster than consumers and merchants can absorb them.

For merchants, the challenge isn't simply offering more ways to pay, it's managing the growing operational complexity that comes with each new payment option.

Today, merchants aren't choosing between payment methods; they're accumulating them because they need to meet customers where they're most comfortable.

In a recent Hope Alive Radio Station interview, our IPP Product Manager Ntombenhle "Enhle" Mposula explained why card payments are unlikely to disappear completely in South Africa.

"Consumers are prone to using their cards because they are faster at till points. Where new payment methods are concerned, there is a behavioural concern for consumers and the question is, 'how quick are these payment methods?'" she explains.

As South Africa's payments landscape continues to evolve, consumer behaviour, convenience, and speed will remain key drivers of adoption.

The practical implication for the payment ecosystem is integration.

Instead of a fragmented environment, where each alternative payment method lives in its own closed loop with its own app, onboarding process, and account, there needs to be a measure of interconnected functionality.
