Two learners log into the same course.

Same dashboard. Same content. Same starting point.

One moves forward without hesitation, but the other pauses, scrolls, tries to work out what comes next, but gets completely stuck.

From the system’s perspective, everything is working.

From the learner’s perspective, theirs isn’t the same experience as their fellow student.

We often assume that once someone is online, they’re ready to learn. But access and readiness aren’t the same, and that space between them can make all the difference in learning and training success.

In this week’s blog, we explore how to close the gap with simple course design strategies, and how to use Moodle tools to flag any challenges early and consistently.

Remember those “Choose Your Own Adventure” books? Every decision changed the path. Open the door - go to page 47. Turn back - go to page 34. Pick the lock - go to page 86. The story responded to you.

Imagine learning that is as responsive, that follows your lead and adapts to your needs, rather than the typical conveyor belt approach where everyone does everything at the same time and pace?

Most learning systems still follow the conveyor belt approach. One course, one sequence, and the same path for everyone, regardless of what they already know or where they get stuck.
In an age where Social Media and YouTube adapts to your every click, whim or hover, pause and search, why can’t learning be more adaptive too?

The problem is usually not a content issue, but more about how the learning path was designed. Our latest blog explores how adaptive learning in a Moodle LMS can guide different learners through the same course. The content stays the same, but the path adjusts. Most importantly, adaptive learning depends on settings in Moodle and happens automatically so teachers and trainers' workloads don’t increase as the learning becomes more adaptive.

𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐓𝐲𝐩𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐌𝐒 𝐀𝐫𝐞 𝐘𝐨𝐮 𝐑𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠?

When your LMS gives you problems, it’s most often not the LMS that’s to blame, but more likely how we use it. Let’s explore this a bit.

You open Netflix, and suddenly nothing looks familiar. Then you realise you’re on someone else’s profile. This is the moment that says something important about learning systems.

Most training environments assume that everyone should move through the same content, in the same order, at the same pace. But learners don’t all start from the same place or learn in the same way. Treating them as though they do creates frustration and fails to capture the potential of learning to lead to actual change.

Adaptive learning is a tool we use with Moodle LMSs to change the learning path without rebuilding the content. It means that the system picks up when learners need support and allows them to loop back, or that faster learners can either move ahead or dig deeper to learn more. With a few key settings in the LMS, the learning content stays the same but the learning experience changes.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐋𝐌𝐒 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭… 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬.

That onboarding course from years ago that no one touches, but no one removes. The category that feels slightly out of place, but somehow still matters. The report that only runs if you don’t ask too many questions.

Like an old heritage home, everything still stands, but you don’t move through it without noticing what’s been left behind. And over time, you stop relying on the structure, but just learn to navigate around the ghosts.

If your LMS rattles in the night, you’re not alone! We’ve come across many LMSs where nothing's catastrophically failed yet, but the moans are growing louder. Why tolerate Edna’s creepy dolls blocking your way, or Bob’s hoard of old folders, when you can have clear corridors and make space for fresh new ideas?

Read this week’s blog to find out how you can remodel your haunted legacies! (and tackles a few other familiar hauntings) here - https://limina.co.za/lms-legacies/

After a few years of constant use, LMS environments can start to feel like heritage buildings. They’ve been extended over time with spaces repurposed and new sections added.

Each change was made for a reason, and changing things now may not help the overall flow and function of the structure. But things are just not working anymore!

Although you can still find your way through it, the journey isn't smooth. You have to remember where things are or rely on where you’ve learnt to look, rather than what the structure shows you.

That’s how legacy builds.

And at some point, it’s worth asking whether this legacy is optimising the learning journey or not. This week’s article tackles the issue of legacy designs.
