Remember that loaf of bread you bought last week... Well this sort of thing is akin to your supermarket coming into your house and charging you a percentage on the five slices of bread you have left...

Vodacom’s fees and the complex set of rules related to its implementation of Icasa’s data expiry regulations are hellishly confusing, are anti-consumer and ultimately represent an own goal by South Africa’s largest mobile operator.

The simple answer to why our Mobile Operators still let Rogue WASP Operators persist is because it generates a great deal of revenue. For every WASP transaction the mobile operator gets a percentage of the money, the more transactions, the more money, its simple economics.

After countless consumer complaints Mobile Operators implemented a double opt-in for WASP services, launched block-all-WASP options, and forced all WASPs to be registered with WASPA (Wireless Application Service Providers’ Association ) in order for them to offer services, but instances still arise whereby consumers are being billed for services they have not subscribed to.

If you find yourself at the proverbial wrong end of the stick here is how to unsubscribe these services dependant on your Service Provider.

Cell C:
Using the USSD string *133*1 # subscribers can block all existing and future content billing.

MTN
Using USSD string (*141*5 #) users select which services to unsubscribe from.

Vodacom:
Unsucbscribe from all WASP services by sending “STOP ALL” to 30333.

Telkom Mobile have laid the gauntlet down with their new competitive FreeMe package offering which looks to change the entire market. At first glance it looks too good to be true ie:

1st tier: R99 gets you 1GB data, 50 texts per day, free calls on Whatsapp, BBM and Viber as well as free on-network calls. On the other end of the spectrum R999 gets you unlimited data and calls to any network. These packages have also been made available to Prepaid Customers as monthly bundles at the same price.

This looks to be perfect timing on Telkoms part just as MTN has implemented a massive price hike on the bulk of their Contract tariffs from 1st August 2016 (In some cases up to 40%).

These new FreeMe packages will be made available from the 25th July 2016.

With the current focus on mobile users data being on a very steep incline, albeit for Social Media, entertainment (Youtube/Netflix) and VOIP etc. What are your current options as local Service Providers still seem to be behind the curve on this offering whilst stats show this is where they are making their most profits. Coincidence?

Taking out a 24 month contract today, you have to ask yourself... is that 500MB or 1GB data bundle per month going to sustain your data needs a year and a half from now?

Seacom is in the market to buy South African Internet Companies and with the Neotel merger with Vodacom falling through citing 'regulatory complexities', rumours have it that Seacom and Econet Wireless have their interest piqued.

Speaking at a recent conference, Suveer Ramdhani, the chief development officer at Seacom, was unable to make any specific statements but did hint that Seacom would love to buy Neotel, if it was an option.
