The importance of an Anti-Money Laundering policy for NGOs

24/03/2023

Does your NGO work with children? Do you have a Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy? NGOs working with children, whether directly or indirectly, have a duty of care to safeguard and protect the children they work with.

One of the key requirements of the Children's Act, which came into effect in 2010, is that all organisations working with children, whether directly or indirectly, must have a Child Protection Policy in place in order to promote and protect the rights of children in South Africa. This policy should outline the measures that your organisation will take to safeguard children from harm, abuse, and neglect. It should also set out the procedures that will be followed in the event of an allegation of abuse or neglect.

Your Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy should cover a range of areas, including recruitment and selection, training, and supervision, reporting and responding to concerns, and monitoring and review. It should also clearly set out the roles and responsibilities of all staff and volunteers and provide guidance on appropriate behaviour and conduct.

If your NGO works directly with children, it is important that you have additional measures in place to ensure their safety. This may include, but is not limited to, background checks and reference checks for all staff and volunteers who will be working with children, regular training on child protection and safeguarding, and the establishment of safe spaces where children can go if they feel unsafe or need to report any concerns.

Even if your NGO works indirectly with children, such as through fundraising or advocacy, it is still important that you have a Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy in place. This policy will help to ensure that your organisation is providing a safe and supportive environment for children, and that you are meeting your legal obligations under the Children's Act.

In conclusion, as an NGO working with children in South Africa, it is essential that you have a Child Protection and Safeguarding Policy in place that meets the requirements of the Children's Act. This will help ensure that you are providing a safe and supportive environment for children and meeting your legal obligations under the Act.

It was a great privilege to attend the SCAN (Stellenbosch Civil Advocacy Network) AGM last week at the Neelsie. Not only did we hear of the amazing collaborations between NGOs in the area, but learned a great deal about current global giving trends with Carolin Gomulia from The Workroom. Also got to present NP/GO - our grant application management software on the big screen! Thank you Marli Goussard for inviting us!

A beautiful story about Emyezweni’s teacher Ncimisa and her son Njongo. Ncimisa use to be a learner at Emyezweni Preschool when she was younger and is now currently a teacher at Emyezweni Preschool.

She says she wants to give back to the young children in her community and provide them with a solid educational foundation. Her ambitions and drive is to grow with Emyezweni and continue to evolve as a teacher at the preschool to be the best teacher she can be.

She expresses she has very great and fond memories of being a learner at Emyezweni and it is her positive experience as a learner that has inspired her to become a teacher. From a young age she was determined to make het dream of becoming a teacher a realisation and come back to teach at Emyezweni.

Emyezweni according to Ncimisa played a big role in her education as she feels it laid a good foundation for her to be able to carry on at school. She finished her Early Childhood Development training at College of Cape Town whilst she did her practicals at Emyezweni. She is currently completing her final exams for her third year of studies at the Cape Pen*sula University of Technology and next year will be her final year before receiving her Diploma in Grade R.

Despite it not being an easy journey she says she has managed it due to all the support and encouragement she received at Emyezweni Preschool. She too brought her son to Emyezweni for his Early Childhood years because she wanted him to receive the same quality of education and care that she did. She expresses how happy and relieved she was in knowing her son Njongo was being taken care of by receiving stationery, breakfast and a healthy cooked meal as this relieved so much of her stress. Her son Njongo was just as happy as she was at Emyezweni.

Emyezweni is impacting and changing young Children’s lives in a massive way. Creating not only fond memories but also laying a firm educational foundation for each learner for them to be able to continue building onto it. Emyezweni fulfils a great need within the Lwandle community, providing peace of mind to the parents of the community that their children are taken care of.

Emyezweni is about more than just education, it is about the overall well-being of each and every learner and being able to set them up for a bright future a head. Have a look at this beautiful picture of Ncumisa and her son Njongo, products of Emyezweni Preschool and the amazing fruits it produces.
