Somebody had a key to this website for a month, and it didn't show up anywhere.

When we found it, it wasn't well hidden. It was hidden in the one place you'd think to look.

Whoever broke in had added themselves an admin account. Then they edited the page in WordPress that lists your users, so their own account was quietly removed from that list before you ever saw it. The count at the top was adjusted to match.

You open Users, you see 5 people, and it says 5. There were 6.

Checking from the server showed it in seconds, because that reads the database directly instead of asking the website to draw you a page.

That's the bit worth taking away. If a site has been tampered with, the site is the last thing you should trust to tell you about it. It can show you a version where everything looks fine, and it will.

The account had been sitting there a month before anyone noticed. Nobody was careless. There was simply nothing to see.

If you've got a WordPress site and nobody has looked at it properly in a while, that's not a crisis. It's just overdue.

The most common reason a website crawls on a phone is photographs nobody resized.

A photo off a camera is 4 to 8MB. A website needs it around 300KB. Nobody tells you that, so the photos go up exactly as they came off the camera, and every single visitor downloads all of it.

On office wifi you'll never notice. On mobile data, outside, standing in a queue, it's brutal. And that's where most of your visitors actually are.

We went through a build recently with 684 photos to place. Every one resized, compressed and converted before it went near the site. Not a glamorous afternoon, but it's the difference between a gallery that loads and a gallery people leave.

Quick test you can do right now. Open your site on your phone with wifi off, and count. More than about 3 seconds, start with your images.

Send us your address and we'll tell you what's actually heavy πŸ‘‡

Every school has a WhatsApp group problem.

A notice goes out by email that half the parents don't read. So somebody forwards it into a class group. Then it gets forwarded to 3 more. By Thursday there are 6 versions of the same message, 2 of them wrong, and a parent asking whether the outing was cancelled.

The information was fine. The distribution was the problem.

We're building The Class Mom to fix exactly that. WhatsApp-first, because that's where South African parents already are, and no app download is going to change that. Notices go out once, to the right list, and stay correct.

It's in live beta at a school right now, with real parents relying on it. Which means it works, and we're still finding things.

If you're at a school drowning in forwarded messages, message us. We'd genuinely like to hear how yours handles it, whether or not you ever use ours.

If you run a WooCommerce store that gets its products from somewhere else, you already know the failure mode.

A supplier feed updates. Prices shift, stock counts move, something gets discontinued. Your store doesn't hear about it. So you sell an item you don't have, at a price that changed last week.

Then you find out from the customer.

We built a product sync plugin to sit between the two and keep them honest. It pulls changes across on a schedule, tells you what moved, and flags what failed instead of quietly skipping it.

That last part matters more than it sounds. Plenty of sync tools fail silently, which is worse than not syncing at all, because you think you're covered.

If you're keeping 2 systems in step by hand, or with a spreadsheet somebody remembers to update, have a look πŸ‘‡

If your website is quick most of the time and occasionally takes forever, that's not your imagination. And it's probably not your hosting.

The randomness is the clue.

WordPress doesn't have a proper scheduler. It fakes one. Every time somebody visits, WordPress checks whether a background job is due, and if one is, that visitor's pageload does the work. Backups, emails, tidying up, all of it.

Which means a customer clicking through from your ad can end up sitting there running your admin queue.

We took on a site that was spiking to 40 seconds. Same host, same theme, no changes to either. Moving that scheduling off the pageload took it to a steady 1.2 seconds.

Nobody had done anything wrong. It's just what WordPress does by default, and it gets worse the busier you get.

If that sounds like your site, send us a message and we'll tell you whether it's this. Takes about 5 minutes to check πŸ‘‡

"What happens if I don't bother with website maintenance?"

Fair question, and the honest answer is nothing at all, for a while.

Then one of 3 things.

Something breaks and you lose sales. A checkout that fails, a form that doesn't send, a site down on the morning your campaign goes out. That money doesn't wander back later.

Somebody gets in and you lose a weekend. Cleaning up a hack costs more than the upkeep would have. Every single time.

Or your rankings drift. Google clocks broken links, slow pages and downtime months before a customer says a word to you. Rankings don't fall off a cliff, they slide, gently, until you're somewhere nobody scrolls.

The first 2 are loud. The third quietly costs you most, because nothing ever tells you it's happening.

The full breakdown, including what you can do yourself πŸ‘‡

Ever hit a website and got a full-screen red warning telling you it isn't safe?

That's usually not a hacked site. That's an SSL certificate nobody renewed.

The certificate is what puts the little padlock next to a web address. It proves to a browser that the site is who it claims to be. They expire, normally once a year, and they don't make a fuss on the way out.

When yours lapses, Chrome puts that red screen in front of every single person trying to reach you. It tells them your site isn't safe. Most of them believe it, close the tab, and never mention it to you.

You don't get a complaint. You get nothing.

Do you know when yours expires? Genuine question, most owners don't.

Here's what else quietly breaks πŸ‘‡

Load-shedding doesn't take your website down. Your host runs generators and a UPS, so the site rides it out quite happily.

It takes you down.

The power goes, the office is dark, your fibre's down and your phone's on 20%. If something broke on your site at 18:00, you'll hear about it at 21:00, from a customer, on a bad connection, with no laptop.

That's why off-site backups and a restore somebody has tested matter more here than they do to an agency in London. What goes offline isn't your website. It's your ability to do anything about it.

And while we're here: a backup sitting on the same server as your site isn't a backup. It's a photocopy stored inside the burning building.

Where does your last backup live? If you're not sure, that's your answer.

Nobody phones us about the importance of website maintenance.

They phone us because the contact form stopped sending, and nobody noticed for 3 weeks.

That's the thing about a website. When a form breaks you don't get an error message. You get silence. And silence looks exactly like a quiet month.

So you don't go looking for a fault. You go looking for a reason business is slow.

Go and test your own contact form today. Fill it in the way a customer would, and check the email lands. Takes 2 minutes.

We wrote up the rest of what breaks while nobody's looking, here πŸ‘‡

On this day in 1979, Apple started building the Lisa.

It was meant to ship in 1981 at $2,000. It shipped in 1983 at $10,000.

The technology was right. It gave most people their first graphical interface. But it landed 2 years late at 5 times the price, and it flopped. Everything good about it ended up in the Macintosh instead.

Your website project won't fail because the idea is bad. It'll fail because nobody held the date or the budget.

That's the whole reason we quote a number and a date, then stick to both.
