Mine safety is moving rapidly towards smarter, more connected and more proactive technology.
In a recent Mining Weekly article, Booyco Electronics highlights how modern Proximity Detection Systems and Collision Prevention Systems are evolving beyond basic warnings to support more intelligent intervention across surface and underground mining operations.
By integrating technologies such as RFID, GPS and other sensing capabilities, these systems can detect interactions between vehicles and pedestrians, provide graded warnings and, where configured, support controlled slowing or stopping.
Data is also becoming central to this shift. Through the Booyco Electronics Asset Management System, BEAMS, mines can analyse safety events, identify high-risk areas and use operational insights to strengthen preventative safety strategies.
Looking ahead, Booyco Electronics is advancing AI-driven risk analysis, remote diagnostics and greater integration with automated and semi-autonomous equipment as mining moves towards increasingly intelligent safety systems.
The Mining Weekly article features insights from Booyco Electronics CEO Anton Lourens, who spoke to Engineering News & Mining Weekly during Electra Mining Africa 2026.
