Minor maintenance on this epic keyboard from the 80s, the legendary JVC KB700, does not sound familiar?

Well, if you're heard Klipwerf Boeremusiek before, this is one of the main keyboards that Kobus Visagie has used all his time in the band, for bass, accompliment strings and some synth guitar and organ sounds.

I got this keyboard some years back for my personal collection but living conditions has caused me to scale down due to space, so it is going to the one and only person who will look after it and use it to its fullest potential; Kobus Visagie from Klipwerf Boere Orkes.

I will miss it but feel its been a pleasure to discover this unique instrument!

Servicing some intermittend tactile switches on the keyboard for piece of mind included in the sale.

Some minor servicing of this Yamaha DX7 mk1... its in pretty rough shape but I cleaned the keys up and gave the PSU a overhaul along with cleaning the faders and tactiles. Sounds great now...

This bad boy belongs to one of the most talented electronic / synth musicians in SA, soon to be reunited!

Another Boss ME-10, the 4th one for a friend of a friend :)

These babies have those pesky, problematic smd capacitors that destroy the board. This one had a repair done with recap some time ago, and sadly there was already a lot of board damage and dry joints. Replaced all the caps with our ceramic caps and brought it back alive. Lots of dry joints and also converting the 110v to 220v by using a space ME-10 transformer for this client.

Lots of work but worth every cent since they have such a unique, hot sound!

If you have any same era gear, be it BOSS, Roland, or even Kurzweil, don't beat around the bush, go ceramic and ditch those electrolytics, it is not worth having your boards destroyed by leaky caps!

I love and hate Behringer gear, a interesting relationship to say the least. I can argue that the last few years of Behringer gear has been well designed for a price that is virtually unbeatable. There is always room for improvement though.

In this case I would argue that even the higher specced name brands would fail... It would be apparent that there is virtually no conformal coating on the PCB's used in these mixers after much of the assembly has been done, so when they get exposed to moisture, they will corrode and/or rust some of the via's (the part that connects tracks via the different layers of the board and components). The use of lead-free solder as well does not help with the fact that soldered joints become white and start corroding too!

Classic case of our Eurolive SX2442FX desk that has had a few sneaky "baths". Ok, more like a few splashes from a leaking roof, but this ultimately led to 4 channels dying which needed resuscitation. Needless to say, there does not seem to be a publicly available service manual either, so prior experience helped here a lot!

The OP-AMPS seem rather robust, the 4580 seems to be a good choice here, CH15 was getting fed 14v into the input of the last OP-AMP which made it register CLIP, and it seems to have taken it like a champ. Removing the pots to gain access to the board and VIA's. allowed us to clean and remove the shorts as well as repair the via's.

The nasty wire bridges where put in to troubleshoot, and as a additional measure should the via fail again.

I love doing something different, while not being without risk, it is great to see when it turns out great.

Remember kids, electrolytic fluid is not your friend anymore once it leaks out from the capacitor housing...

In this classic case of Roland / Boss gear from the 90's, these caps where notorious for failing, which in the case of a Boss ME10, dries the cap out making the audio signal soft between stages and most gruesomely, chews away at the board breaking tracks and making the pedal unusable.

In this example I asked the question, why can't ceramic caps be used? Surely it has to work. And it did! Glad to have 2 restored ME-10 pedals, sounding larger than life and totally ceramic with only the PSU containing larger Electrolytic caps!

This week in the workshop I got in a original Moog Ta**us 2 Bass synthesizer and a Korg X50 for service and repair. While the Korg X50 is not so special, the Moog is certainly very special.

So exciting!

Another successful repair and recap job. This time it was my personal synth I had fixed after quite some time holding off.

I am glad to have finally gotten to it :) Complete with a rare PG200 programmer, which also just needs one more chip to be brought to life!

Some blood, sweat, tears and a couple of late nights, but this vintage piece of goodness is finally working again and sounding great. The original Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 from the early 80s era!

Time for its brother (or sister if you want) to receive the same treatment and be brought back to life!

Happy client getting his Yamaha HS50
studio monitor back. One monitor suffered terrible noise nearly blowing the woofer out when switched on. Turned out to be a failing 15V regulator.

Yamaha LOVES using these insulated regulators that dont transfer heat away that effectively, resulting in failure of the regulator. Replacement with a normal, uninsulated regulator will prove to be more reliable going forward.

Laney BC120 Bass amplifier was repaired and cleaned.

Amp was crackling an making weird noises when playing, turned out to be a dry / broken connection on one of the big main filter caps.

Voice coil dust cover also returned to normal position.

Some servicing to the sliders and pots and she is good as new!
