The Process (Strategy First)!

People often think professional graphic design starts the moment I open Adobe Illustrator. It doesn’t. By the time I actually sit down at my computer, the most critical part of the branding process is already complete.

It starts with listening to what a business owner says—and what they don’t say. It starts with asking deep, intentional questions:
What problem are we actually trying to solve?
Who are you trying to reach in your market?
What should your customers feel when they interact with your brand?
Only once I understand the bigger strategic picture do I begin exploring colour palettes, typography, or visual layout.
After more than 23 years as a graphic designer, I’ve learnt that beautiful design is just a by-product. The real value lies in understanding people and using strategic design to bridge the gap between your business and your target market.

Whether I am creating a custom logo design, producing a company profile, illustrating a concept, or developing product packaging, every creative decision is intentional. That is the true difference experience brings.

A creative mind is a strange thing.

It doesn't clock in at 8 and switch off at 5.

It's the conversation over coffee that sparks an idea. The scribble in a notebook that solves a problem. The packaging spotted on a supermarket shelf. The colour combination on a stranger's shirt. The way someone picks up a product — or walks straight past it.

It's noticing.

Constantly.

Everywhere.

Asking questions most people don't think to ask.

Why does that catch my attention? Why does that feel confusing? Why do I remember that brand but not the one next to it?

Long before I sit down at a computer, my brain is already working.

Observing. Collecting. Connecting dots.

Because creativity isn't something I do.

It's how I move through the world.

The computer is simply where all those thoughts, observations and ideas eventually find a home.

The design comes later.

The thinking never really stops.

One of the most rewarding parts of this industry is getting to grow alongside a brand.

I’ve been working with George’s Bakery since 2019.

Back then, it was a much smaller business.
Today, George’s has grown into 10 stores — with more still to come.

And honestly…
watching that growth happen through years of consistent branding, marketing, packaging, promotions and community connection has been incredibly special to be part of.

This project has never just been about “making graphics.”

It’s been about helping shape the visual experience of a real bakery brand —
from menus and packaging,
to social media campaigns,
to in-store promotions,
to website design,
to print production and rollout across multiple stores.

George and Angie built this brand with heart.

An old-school mom-and-pop style bakery focused on:
scratch baking,
craft breads,
coffee,
community,
and good food made properly.

That authenticity became the foundation of the creative direction.

Warm tones.
Appetite-driven visuals.
Strong consistency.
Approachable marketing.
Real food.
Real people.

And honestly?
That’s what people connect to now more than ever.

Not over-polished perfection.
Not corporate noise.

Human brands.

Seeing where George’s started and where it is today is something I’m incredibly proud to have been part of.

Designing for a CBD wellness brand meant walking a very fine line.
The challenge wasn’t just creating a logo.
It was creating a feeling.

The client wanted the brand to feel: calm, elevated, modern, organic, wellness-focused…without falling into the stereotypical visual language often associated with c@nn@bis branding.
So instead of designing around the obvious, we designed around emotion and perception.

The c@nn@bis leaf became softer. More geometric. More elegant. Almost symbolic rather than literal.
The typography needed flow and refinement. The colour palette needed to feel grounded, natural and calming. The packaging needed to feel premium, tactile and trustworthy.

Every detail was considered — from the name, the spacing of the logo, to the softness of the green tones, to the embossing and spot varnish on the final cartons.
Because modern branding isn’t just about how something looks.
It’s about how it makes people feel before they’ve even touched the product.

And honestly… seeing these cartons come off press with the matt laminate, embossing and spot varnish was one of those “this is why I love design” moments.
