New Rombertik Malware attacks hard drives, and wipes MBR if detected.

The game of cat-and-mouse between malware authors and security white hats may have entered a new phase this week, thanks to an aggressive new malware system that doesn’t just attempt to obfuscate its own operation — it aggressively scans for clues that others are monitoring its actions. If it detects that it’s operating within a Virtual Machine, the malware, dubbed Rombertik, will go nuclear and attempt to overwrite the master boot record of the local hard drive.

Cisco’s threat response team has detailed the operation of Rombertik, and the malware’s obfuscation and attack vectors are unique. Once installed, it’s a fairly standard data sniffer that grabs indiscriminately from the information available on an infected PC. What sets Rombertik apart is the way it checks to see if it’s running in a VM-provided sandbox, and the actions it takes if it finds itself in such a mode.

Well, there’s yet another extremely dangerous scam making the rounds on Facebook, and it’s an easy one to fall for. It goes something like this…
You’re scrolling through your Facebook news feed when an interesting video catches your attention. You click on it to watch it, but instead of the video you’re presented with a warning that your computer’s Flash Player is out of date and needs to be updated. Well, it doesn’t.
If you click the link thinking you’ll be updating the Flash Player, you’ll actually end up downloading a nasty virus that can pretend to be you and take over your computer. It can even simulate key strokes and mouse clicks in order to steal your personal information and trash your operating system.
Bottom line: Never click ANY link on Facebook to update ANYTHING on your computer. If you see a link like that, it’s a scam. Always. There are no exceptions.

How to Check If Your Antivirus Is Effective

* Then Save File As “checkantivirus.com” including quotation-marks.

* Some seconds after saving this file, your Anti-Virus should come with the message that this file is infected with a virus asking permission for its deletion/cleaning or quarantine.

* This file is secure and it’s not going to infect your computer in whatever way. It is a standard text developed to test antiviruses.

* If your Anti-Virus fails to see this file as a virus then you should probably find another Anti-Virus.

While nobody is immune to an online security breech, remember to change passwords regularly, do not use the same password for everything, and do not respond to requests for personal information through email, text, or telephone calls. No legitimate company or bank will ask you for your password. If you have a question, do not click on links or use numbers provided in emails or texts. Contact the company using the official links or phone numbers provided to you on bank statements or other official documents from the company.
