Week 3 of the 6-month plan β€” this is the one where last week's lesson actually got tested.
I pulled a real photometric diagram (the manufacturer's official beam pattern and lumen chart) for a fixture I've actually worked on for a client, and set myself one goal: match it in 3D β€” not guess at it, actually match it.
First pass was close but not right. My beam angle was off by 3–4 degrees, which sounds small until you realize that's the difference in how far light actually reaches across a real wall. I went back, adjusted the IES import settings, and this time checked candela values at multiple angles instead of just trusting the center beam.
Second pass overlaid almost exactly onto the real diagram.
The real difference between week 2 me and week 3 me: I now actually know what I'm checking for, instead of just hoping it looks right.
Small technical win on paper, but this is genuinely the deliverable that makes a render useful to a lighting engineer, not just something pretty for a marketing deck. That's the whole point of this plan.

Week 2 of the 6-month plan β€” and this one humbled me a bit.
The goal was to import real lighting data (an IES file, straight from an actual LED fixture's spec sheet) and get it to behave technically accurately in a 3D scene β€” not just look good, but be correct.
My first three attempts looked wrong. Too harsh, too flat, or blown out entirely. That's when it hit me: for 8 years I'd trained my eye to ask "does this look good?" That's a completely different skill from "is this physically accurate?" I only had one of the two.
Spent most of the week re-learning the basics β€” exposure, unit conversion (lumens, lux, candela are all different things, and yes, I mixed them up more than once), and how light actually behaves as it travels through real space versus how I'd been faking it in renders for years.
By Friday, I got my first import that actually matched the real spec sheet. Small win β€” but it's the exact skill that makes a render genuinely useful to engineers, not just something pretty for marketing.
Week 3: testing this on an actual fixture from my own client work and comparing it against the real photometric diagram.

One week into the 6-month plan. Here's the honest update.
7 hours committed. 7 hours actually spent β€” no cheating on this one, I promised myself real accountability.
What I learned: viewport navigation, basic rigging logic, and how differently real-time engines think compared to offline rendering. Blender optimizes for the final frame. Unreal optimizes for every possible frame happening at once. That mental shift alone took me 3 days to actually feel.
What was harder than expected: unlearning 8 years of habits. I kept trying to "set up the perfect shot" instead of building a scene that works from any angle. Old instincts die slow.
What's next, week 2: first IES lighting file import. Taking a real spec sheet from an actual LED fixture and seeing if I can get the light in the scene to behave the way the engineer designed it β€” not just look pretty, but be technically true.
No fancy render to show yet. Just a rough scene and a lot of new tabs open. That's what week 1 of learning something real actually looks like.

I just mapped out my next 6 months β€” and it's uncomfortable to share.
For 8 years, I've been a CGI/3D artist for lighting brands. Renders, animations, product visualizations. I got good at it.
But "good at it" isn't the same as "top 1%."
So I sat down and audited myself honestly:
βœ… Strong: CGI rendering, LED visualization, brand identity, 7 years of real client work
❌ Weak: Real-time 3D (everything I make is offline-rendered), no procedural workflow (I model every product variant by hand β€” doesn't scale), no photometric accuracy (my renders look good but aren't lux/lumen-correct, which is what lighting engineers actually need)
That second list stung to write. But it's the honest one.
So here's my plan for the next 6 months, 7 hours a week:
β†’ Learn real-time 3D configurators (so clients can customize a fixture live on their own website β€” almost nobody in lighting-CGI offers this)
β†’ Learn photometric/IES-accurate rendering (so my visuals are technically credible to engineers, not just marketing teams)
β†’ Learn parametric modeling (so one fixture "rig" generates every color/finish variant instead of me remodeling each one)
By month 3, I'm building a public proof project: a real LED fixture as a live, web-based configurator β€” color temp, beam angle, and finish, updating in real time, lit with actual IES data pulled from the real spec sheet.
By month 6, I want this to be a new service line β€” not just a skill I learned for fun.
