I just mapped out my next 6 months β and it's uncomfortable to share.
For 8 years, I've been a CGI/3D artist for lighting brands. Renders, animations, product visualizations. I got good at it.
But "good at it" isn't the same as "top 1%."
So I sat down and audited myself honestly:

Strong: CGI rendering, LED visualization, brand identity, 7 years of real client work
β Weak: Real-time 3D (everything I make is offline-rendered), no procedural workflow (I model every product variant by hand β doesn't scale), no photometric accuracy (my renders look good but aren't lux/lumen-correct, which is what lighting engineers actually need)
That second list stung to write. But it's the honest one.
So here's my plan for the next 6 months, 7 hours a week:
β Learn real-time 3D configurators (so clients can customize a fixture live on their own website β almost nobody in lighting-CGI offers this)
β Learn photometric/IES-accurate rendering (so my visuals are technically credible to engineers, not just marketing teams)
β Learn parametric modeling (so one fixture "rig" generates every color/finish variant instead of me remodeling each one)
By month 3, I'm building a public proof project: a real LED fixture as a live, web-based configurator β color temp, beam angle, and finish, updating in real time, lit with actual IES data pulled from the real spec sheet.
By month 6, I want this to be a new service line β not just a skill I learned for fun.
I'm sharing this publicly because accountability works better out loud than in private.
