The Unattainable Triangle.

This diagram is relevant for all business dealings, not just for creatives but it was one that was shared with me in my first agency role.

It introduced our design team to managing unrealistic client expectations before we committed to a project.

Using the diagram to guide a client, they can only ever have two sides of the triangle – cheap and fast, fast and good, or good and cheap. Demanding or committing to all three should be avoided because it’s unsustainable. Sooner or later, one of the three sides will compromise the project. This is an effective rationale to safeguarding valuable time, money and quality:

If a client wants it cheap and fast, don’t expect good quality.
If a client wants it fast and good, expect a rush service charge.
If a client wants it good and cheap, don’t expect it to be a priority.
