BELS Training Course and Workshop!

From 22 to 24 May 2018, in the framework of the H2020 BELS project, NAVIS Centre, with the support of the Department of Survey, Mapping and Geoinformation (DOSMG - Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) organized a two-day traning course, followed by a one-day workshop on European Global Navigation Satellite System (E-GNSS) for Sustainable Development in South East Asia.

The two day training course aimed at providing participants with fundamentals on GNSS, and precise positioning technologies. There were 41 participants from 8 ASEAN Member State countries. As for Vietnamese participants, beside those from Hanoi, the training course had many attendees representing the Department of Natuaral Resources and Environment of most of the provinces in the Northern part of Vietnam. This was also the first time that NAVIS run an international training course with the course design, lectures, experiments, and experimental equipments, all made by the Centre (with some material supports from ISMB and UPC). This fact proves the significant growth of the Centre in recent years, and the Centre now is ready to become an international GNSS hub in the region.

During the training course, the participants also paid a visit to the DOSMG to experience the National CORS Data Centre managed by DOSMG, also visited one of its CORS station located in Ba Vi district, which is 50km far away from Hanoi.

The succesful two-day training course was followed by a one day workshop, which is also the last of the series of 10 one-day workshop that the BELS project organized in the South East Asian region in the last 3 years. The workshop had 92 participants from Vietnam and other 7 ASEAN Member States. The opening speeches were given by Prof. Dinh Van Phong - Vice President of HUST, and Ms. Axelle Nicaise, Head of Politics, Press & Information Section at the EU Delegation to Vietnam.

There were 19 presentations from Vietnamese and international experts covering from the fundamentals of GNSS to the updated topics on GNSS applications in aviation and UAV survey. In the afternoon of the workshop day, the representatives from the ASEAN member staters also present their country reports on the use of GNSS in each country. That session brought the audience with the status of the development of the GNSS technology in the region. The workshop was concluded with a panel dicussion, in which the participants shared their views and opinions on how to develop the field in the SEA region, one of the most motivated region in the World, but doesnot own any satellite navigation system.

NAVIS attends the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit 2018

From March 5 to 7, 2018, Prof. Ta Hai Tung, as Director of the NAVIS Centre and Co-Chair of Multi GNSS Asia, was invited to join the Munich Satellite Navigation Summit 2018, which is one of the most important events on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) field in the World.

The Summit is annually organized in Bavaria (Germany) - one of the centers of the EU aerospace industry. Unlike other workshops, and conferences in the field, which focus more on technical aspects, the Summit offers to participants a broad overview and different perspectives on the latest developments of GNSS, given by high ranking speakers from industry, science, and governments.

At the Summit, Prof. Tung joint the 5th panel discussion to give his view on the perspectives of the Galileo technology in South East Asia (SEA), one of the most active regions in the World, but unfortunately, does not have its own satellite navigation system. It should be reminded that, since 2010, the NAVIS Centre at HUST has been carried on many activities related to the Galileo system and technology in SEA, ranging from R&D, awareness raising, capacity building, to product and solution promotion. One achievement of NAVIS regarding the Galileo technology is in 2013, NAVIS received the certificate issued by the European Space Agency (ESA) that recognizes the team as one among the first 50 institutions in the World able to obtain a fix using the Galileo system. Through these activities, the NAVIS team has gained many experiences, as well as understandings not only on the advantages of the Galileo technology, but also on its perspectives to satisfy the local needs of the regional users. All these have made NAVIS become the regional hub for the Galileo technology in the South East Asia.

In addition, at the Summit, many EU partners, who have been cooperating with NAVIS, expressed their appreciation to the significant contributions of the Centre to their activities in the region so far. To strengthen the current relationships, during the Summit, there were many fruitful discussions on new possible cooperation opportunities between NAVIS and EU institutions and industries. And in particular, the important discussion with high ranking officers of the European Commission on concrete support mechanisms to the Centre paved the promising and fundamental way for the new development of the NAVIS towards the objective of becoming a Galileo Ambassador in Asia.

Từ ngày 5 đến 7 tháng 3 năm 2018, với tư cách là Giám đốc Trung tâm NAVIS và Đồng Chủ tịch của Tổ chức Định vị đa hệ thống Châu Á, PGS. Tạ Hải Tùng được mời tham dự Hội nghị Munich về Công nghệ định vị sử dụng vệ tinh (MSNS), một trong những sự kiện quan trọng nhất của lĩnh vực này trên Thế giới. Hội nghị MSNS được tổ chức hàng năm tại vùng Bavaria (Đức), một trong những trung tâm về công nghệ hàng không, vũ trụ quan trọng nhất của Châu Âu. Khác với các hội thảo, hội nghị khác trong lĩnh vực này vốn tập trung vào các khía cạnh kỹ thuật, thông qua các bài trình bày và thảo luận của các diễn giả có uy ín trong lĩnh vực đến từ khối doanh nghiệp, khoa học và quản lý, Hội nghị MSNS cung cấp cho các đại biểu tham dự bức tranh toàn cảnh và các triển vọng phát triển mới nhất của công nghệ vệ tinh định vị toàn cầu (GNSS) trên Thế giới.

Tại Hội nghị, PGS. Tùng được mời tham dự phiên thảo luận thứ 5 của Hội nghị để chia sẻ về kinh nghiệm triển khai, cũng như đánh giá về triển vọng phát triển của công nghệ Galileo tại khu vực Đông Nam Á, một trong những khu vực năng động nhất trên Thế giới, nhưng lại không sở hữu một hệ thống vệ tinh định vị nào. Cần phải nói thêm rằng, từ 2010, Trung tâm NAVIS đã và đang triển khai nhiều hoạt động liên quan đến công nghệ Galileo tại khu vực Đông Nam Á, như: nghiên cứu và phát triển, nâng cao nhận thức, phát triển nguồn nhân lực, và giới thiệu công nghệ / giải pháp mới. Một trong những thành quả lớn nhất của Trung tâm liên quan đến công nghệ Galileo là vào năm 2013, Trung tâm được Cơ quan Vũ trụ Châu Âu ESA chứng nhận là 1 trong 50 đơn vị đầu tiên trên Thế giới sử dụng thành công tín hiệu Galileo cho mục đích định vị. Qua những hoạt động này, Trung tâm NAVIS đã thu thập được nhiều kinh nghiệm cũng như sự hiểu biết về tiềm năng của công nghệ Galileo, cũng như triển vọng của nó trong việc đáp ứng nhu cầu của người sử dụng trong khu vực. Tất cả những thành quả này đã giúp NAVIS trở thành trung tâm về công nghệ Galileo tại khu vực Đông Nam Á trong thời gian vừa qua.

Thêm vào đó, tại Hội nghị, NAVIS đã nhận được sự ghi nhận xứng đáng của các đối tác EU về sự đóng góp quan trọng đối với các hoạt động nghiên cứu và phát triển của họ tại khu vực. Để củng cố và nâng cao hơn nữa mối quan hệ hợp tác, trong thời gian diễn ra hội nghị đã có nhiều cuộc tiếp xúc và thảo luận hiệu quả giữa NAVIS và các đối tác đến từ các trường đại học, viện nghiên cứu, và các công ty công nghệ GNSS của Châu Âu. Trong đó, đặc biệt quan trọng là các buổi thảo luận với các quan chức cao cấp của Ủy ban Châu Âu EC về việc tìm kiếm các cơ chế hợp tác và hỗ trợ NAVIS trong các hoạt động nghiên cứu và phát triển công nghệ, mà kết quả của các thảo luận này hứa hẹn mở ra những triển vọng phát triển mới cho NAVIS, hướng tới mục tiêu trở thành “Đại sứ về Công nghệ Galileo” tại Châu Á.

GILD Workshop on Resilient GNSS: Current Status and Solutions in Vietnam and the World

The 1st GILD Workshop on Resilient GNSS was held today, on November the 30th, in Hanoi at the presence of Professor Mariano Anderle, Scientific Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Vietnam, and of Professor Trần Văn Tớp, Vice President of Hanoi University of Science and Technology, of Dr. Phan Đức Hiếu, Director General of Dept. of Survey, Mapping and GIS (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment), of Dr. Doãn Hà Thắng, Chief of Office of Space Committee of Vietnam, Dr. Trần Hữu Minh, Deputy Chief of National Traffic Safety of Vietnam, and Mr. Đỗ Công Thủy, Deputy Director of Transport Department (Directorate for Roads of Vietnam).

The Workshop presented needs and ongoing activities in the field of satellite navigation (GNSS) in Vietnam. All of the most relevant Vietnamese GNSS shareholders participated and contributed to the workshop. Among them: the Directorate of Roads-Ministry of Transports, the Department of Survey, Mapping and GIS – Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Institute of Geophysics - Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, the Vietnam Metrology Institute, and the Navis Centre of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology. It was also the occasion to provide attendants with an overview of state-of-the-art solutions which make GNSS-based applications more resilient to external threats.

The Workshop was organized in the framework of the Italy-Vietnam scientific collaboration project (Progetto di Grande Rilevanza) GILD, co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) and the Vietnamese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST).

GILD - GNSS Interference and Jamming Localization and Detection in Vietnam, is a research project aiming to design, implement and test a prototype able to localize and detect sources of interfering and jamming signals which can impair GNSS-based equipment. Specific focus is on GNSS solutions for the traffic monitoring in Vietnam.

The GILD team gathers Italian and Vietnamese researchers aiming to merge their expertise in the field of satellite navigation and in GNSS receivers. The partners of the GILD project are the Navigation group of Istituto Superiore Mario Boella and Politecnico di Torino (NavSAS Group) and the Navis Centre of the Hanoi University of Science and Technology.

Hội thảo “Các vấn đề về độ tin cậy và an toàn - an ninh thông tin trong định vị sử dụng vệ tinh: thực trạng và giải pháp tại Việt Nam và trên thế giới” được tổ chức trong khuôn khổ Hiệp định Hợp tác KH&CN giữa Việt Nam và Italia, và được đồng tổ chức bởi Trung tâm NAVIS, và Viện Nghiên cứu Cao cấp Mario Boella (Cộng hòa Italia).
Hội thảo là cơ hội để các nhà khoa học, các cán bộ nghiên cứu, và các nhà quản lý trao đổi và thảo luận các chủ đề trong một lĩnh vực đang dành được nhiều sự quan tâm trên Thế giới, nhưng chưa được quan tâm đúng mức tại Việt Nam, đó là: Đảm bảo độ tin cậy, và an toàn - an ninh thông tin trong định vị sử dụng vệ tinh.
Hiện tại, theo thống kê tại một trạm giám sát đặt tại Trung tâm NAVIS, bình quân mỗi ngày có hàng chục sự kiện gây nhiễu có chủ đích lên tín hiệu định vị GPS, điều này có thể gây ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng đến hoạt động của các hệ thống định vị, và viễn thông; mà trong số đó có nhiều hệ thống có vai trò thiết yếu trong đảm bảo an toàn sinh mạng (Safety-of-Life, như: hàng không, hàng hải, đường sắt…), cũng như đảm bảo an ninh – quốc phòng. Ngoài ra, trên Thế giới hiện tại đã xuất hiện các nguy cơ về giả mạo tín hiệu, theo đó, các hệ thống định vị bị đánh lừa bởi các nguồn phát tín hiệu giả mạo, gây ra những vấn đề nghiêm trọng trong đảm bảo an toàn, an ninh định vị, đặc biệt trên không, và trên biển.
Các vấn đề này còn trở nên đáng quan ngại hơn với các nước không có hệ thống vệ tinh định vị của riêng mình như Việt Nam, và Hội thảo là cơ hội để các nhà khoa học trong và ngoài nước trình bày các kết quả nghiên cứu cập nhật nhất, và qua đó đề xuất các giải pháp góp phần nâng cao độ tin cậy, và an toàn - an ninh thông tin trong định vị tại Việt Nam.

NAVIS AT THE 9th MULTI-GNSS ASIA CONFERENCE

Trong các ngày từ 9 đến 11 tháng 10 năm 2017, Hội nghị thường niên lần thứ 9 của Tổ chức Đa hệ thống vệ tinh định vị toàn cầu khu vực Châu Á - Châu Đại dương (Multi-GNSS Asia - MGA) được tổ chức tại Khách sạn Ayana, Thủ đô Jakarta, Cộng hoà Indonesia. Hội nghị lần này được đồng tổ chức bởi Cơ quan Vũ trụ Nhật Bản (JAXA), Cơ quan Hàng không Vũ trụ Indonesia (LAPAN), Dự án BELS (EU), và được bảo trợ bởi Ủy ban Quốc tế về GNSS (ICG - Liên Hiệp Quốc), và Tổ chức Dịch vụ GNSS Quốc tế (IGS).

Hội nghị có sự tham gia của 179 đại biểu là các nhà hoạch định chính sách, đại diện các cơ quan quản lý, nhà khoa học, và doanh nghiệp đến từ 20 nước, trong đó đặc biệt là các đại diện đến từ các nhà cung cấp dịch vụ định vị như GPS (Mỹ), Galileo (EU), Beidou (Trung Quốc), và QZSS (Nhật Bản). Với chủ đề: “Các giải pháp định vị đa hệ thống thế hệ mới an toàn và tin cậy cho sự phát triển bền vững”, các đại biểu đã trình bày và trao đổi các kết quả nghiên cứu, các giải pháp kỹ thuật, và các sản phẩm công nghệ cao trong các lĩnh vực mới và "nóng" của định vị sử dụng vệ tinh như: định vị đa hệ thống, định vị độ chính xác cao, nâng cao độ an toàn và an ninh định vị (chống phá sóng và giả mạo tín hiệu), nâng cao độ tin cậy dịch vụ định vị...

Tại Hội nghị lần này, Trung tâm NAVIS tham dự với 4 thành viên: PGS. Tạ Hải Tùng, TS. Hoàng Văn Hiệp, NCS. ThS. Nguyễn Đình Thuận, NCS. ThS. Nguyễn Thị Thanh Tú. Các thành viên của NAVIS đã tham gia tích cực vào các hoạt động của Hội nghị, trong đó PGS. Tạ Hải Tùng - Giám đốc Trung tâm và là Đồng Chủ tịch Tổ chức MGA - là Chủ tịch của Hội nghị lần này.
Các nhà khoa học của NAVIS đã trình bày các kết quả nghiên cứu hàn lâm mới nhất của Trung tâm theo các định hướng nghiên cứu đang dành được nhiều sự quan tâm trên thế giới như:
- Thiết kế bộ thu đa hệ thống GNSS tiêu thụ năng lượng thấp;
- Nghiên cứu và triển khai phương pháp xác thực tín hiệu định vị; và
- Nghiên cứu và phát triển công cụ phân tích dữ liệu giám sát tầng điện ly tại khu vực cận xích đạo.

Sự tham gia tích cực của NAVIS (ĐHBK HN) vào các hoạt động của Hội nghị lần thứ 9 này nói riêng, và của Tổ chức MGA nói chung thể hiện năng lực và uy tín chuyên môn, cũng như sự chủ động trong hợp tác quốc tế của đơn vị trong một lĩnh vực mới và có ý nghĩa quan trọng đến nhiều mặt của đời sống như định vị sử dụng vệ tinh GNSS.

From October 9th to 11th, 2017, the 9th edition of the Multi GNSS Asia Conference was organized at the Ayana Hotel, Jakarta, Republic of Indonesia. This year the Conference was co-organized by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), National Institute of Aeronautics and Space (LAPAN, Indonesia), BELS project (EU); and supported by International Committee on Global Navigation Satellite Systems (ICG, UN), and International GNSS Service (IGS).

This year, the conference had 179 participants from 20 countries, who are the representative of public authorities, academia, and industries, especially those of the main GNSS providers in the world, such as: GPS (USA), Galileo (EU), Beidou (China) and QZSS (Japan). With the theme of "Next Generation Multi-GNSS Resilient Solutions for Sustainable Development", in 3 days of the conference, the participants presented their research results, new technical solutions, as well as advanced products focusing on the latest trends in the field of GNSS, such as: Multi-GNSS positioning, precise positioning, resilient solutions for anti-spoofing, anti-jamming, interference mitigation, ionospheric scintillation monitoring, signal authentication, receiver testing and validation...

In this edition of the conference, NAVIS participated with 4 members: Prof. Ta Hai Tung, Dr. Hoang Van Hiep, and two PhD students cm researchers: MSc. Nguyen Dinh Thuan, and MSc. Nguyen Thi Thanh Tu. At the conference, Prof. Ta Hai Tung - Director of the NAVIS Centre - is the Co-Chair of the MGA organization and also the conference. NAVIS had 3 presentations on its newest research results on some of the hot topics in the field, on which the Centre has been focusing in recent years:
- Low power Multi GNSS receivers;
- GNSS signal authentication for anti spoofing; and
- Ionospheric scintillation monitoring.

The involvement of the NAVIS (HUST) in the activities of the Conference and in general, the organization has proved the professional capabilities as well as the active roles of the Centre in this cutting-edge technology in the region.

NAVIS welcomes the visit of Dr. Dinesh Manandhar, the University of Tokyo, Japan to discuss the collaboration on GNSS data sharing for research purposes.

Currently, NAVIS is operating 6 signal monitoring systems. Beside the one solely owned by the Center, the other 5 are jointly managed in collaborations with various partners from European Commission, Italy, UK, Japan, Belgium.

Those stations are really important for research on GNSS precise positioning, ionosphere modeling/scintillation monitoring, and interference mitigation!

NAVIS welcomes the visit of Mr. Luca Siniscalco from Thales Alenia Space - Italia (TASI), one of the main GNSS ground station manufacturers in the world. The visit is in the framework of the BELS project between NAVIS and European and Asian partner in the field of GNSS. During the stay in NAVIS, Mr. Luca also gave a seminar on receiver design to the researchers and students of NAVIS!

Director of NAVIS appointed as new Co-Chair of MultiGNSS Asia Organization!!!

On November 15th, 2016, at the 8th MultiGNSS Asia Workshop, in Manila, The Philippines, the Steering Committee of the MultiGNSS Asia (MGA) appointed Prof. Ta Hai Tung to be the new Co-Chair of the organization. With this appointment, Prof. Ta Hai Tung and Prof. Teruyuki Kato (The University of Tokyo - Japan) are two co-chairs of MGA.

MGA is the largest professional organization in satellite navigation technology in Asia and Oceania region. Currently, 52 universities, institutions, organizations and companies related to the field from 15 countries are members of MGA. With the support of Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), MGA aims at promoting the multi-GNSS utilization and applications in the Asia and Oceania region. Every year, MGA organizes an annual workshop which gathers academic and industrial experts from all over the world to share knowledge and experience in this cutting-edge technology: satellite navigation. This year in Manila, The Philippines, the MGA Workshop had 254 participants from 23 countries.

The appointment of Prof. Tung can be considered as a great honor and achievement for himself and also for the whole team at the NAVIS Centre - Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Established in 2010, and changing to the co-directors policy (with international co-director) in 2012, since then, together with the fruitful international cooperations, especially with European partners, the Centre has had significant contributions to the development of satellite navigation not only in Vietnam but also in the region.

We hope that in the years to come, with the new role, Prof. Tung and the team can play a more and more active role in R&D, technology transfers, and capacity buildings to promote the use of MultiGNSS for the socio and economic development of the region.

H2020 JUPITER project and NAVIS co-organize the International Workshop on Research and Applications of EGNSS on Intelligent Transport Systems at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, on Saturday, April 23rd 2016.
The Workshop focuses on the use of GNSS in general and E-GNSS in particular in the field of ITS. R&D results; applications and experience sharings are presented to audience by experts from EU, Thailand and Vietnam.
