How to Navigate Between IOS Modes
by Faraaz ALi

Various commands are used to move in and out of command prompts. To move from user EXEC mode to privileged EXEC mode, use the enable command. Use the disable privileged EXEC mode command to return to user EXEC mode.

Note: Privileged EXEC mode is sometimes called enable mode.

To move in and out of global configuration mode, use the configure terminal privileged EXEC mode command. To return to the privileged EXEC mode, enter the exit global config mode command.

There are many different sub-configuration modes. For example, to enter line sub-configuration mode, you use the line command followed by the management line type and a number you wish to access. To exit a sub-configuration mode and return to global configuration mode, use the exit command. Notice the changes in the command prompt.

Switch(config) # line console 0

Switch(config-line) # exit

Switch(config) #

To move from any sub-configuration mode of the global configuration mode to the mode one step above it in the hierarchy of modes, enter the exit command.

To move from any sub-configuration mode to the privileged EXEC mode, enter the end command or enter the key combination Ctrl+Z.

Switch(config-line) # end

Switch #

You can also move directly from one sub-configuration mode to another. Notice how after selecting an interface, the command prompt changes from (config-line) # to (config-if) #.

Switch(config-line) # interface FastEthernet 0/1

Switch(config-if) #

Configuration Command Modes
by Faraaz Ali

To configure the device, the user must enter Global Configuration Mode, which is commonly called the global config mode.

From global config mode, CLI configuration changes are made that affect the operation of the device as a whole. Global configuration mode is identified by a prompt that ends with (config) # after the device name, such as Switch(config) #.

Global configuration mode is accessed before other specific configuration modes. From the global config mode, the user can enter different sub-configuration modes. Each of these modes allows the configuration of a particular part or function of the IOS device.

Two common sub-configuration modes include:
Line Configuration Mode - Used to configure console, SSH, Telnet, or AUX access.

Interface Configuration Mode - Used to configure a switch port or router network interface.

When using the CLI, the mode is identified by the command-line prompt that is unique to that mode. By default, every prompt begins with the device name. Following the name, the remainder of the prompt indicates the mode. For example, the default prompt for line configuration mode is Switch(config-line) # and the default prompt for interface configuration mode is Switch(config-if) #.

Coronavirus helped in CCIE lab extension.

Current CCIE Lab Exams Extended, Migration to Occur on April 27, 2020

We are communicating to our CCIE community that we are extending the timeline for the CCIE lab exams and CCIE certification migrations, from February 24th to April 27, 2020. This means that you can take the existing CCIE lab before April 27, or choose to take the new CCIE lab on or after April 27th.

As you may be aware, on January 30, the World Health Organization declared the Coronavirus outbreak a global health emergency. Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected. Cisco has a well-established process to coordinate our efforts during outbreaks like this, and we have been tracking the situation and taking appropriate action during recent days and weeks. The safety of our customers, partners and employees is always our priority.

One of the actions taken as a result of the continued spread of the virus, was to close CCIE labs in Hong Kong and Beijing, from February 1 through February 14, 2020. These closures impact the timeline for the transition of the CCIE lab exams planned on February 24, 2020, not just for those planning to test in Beijing or Hong Kong, but for our customers globally who have been affected by travel restrictions, business closures and other related circumstances.

We therefore have made the decision to delay the migration of existing CCIE certifications to new CCIE certifications until April 27, 2020, when we will transition to the new CCIE lab exams. All other elements of the portfolio transition will take effect as planned on February 24.

If you would like to schedule the current CCIE lab exam before April 27, or would prefer to wait and take the new CCIE lab exam on or after April 27, please be patient as we try to accommodate those affected in the region and update the scheduler. We will continue to update you. Seating may be limited. Those who were directly affected by the lab closings in Beijing and Hong Kong have been contacted separately and given priority in rescheduling.

Please note, we ask that you do not travel to other testing centers from mainland China at this time and do not travel to any testing center if you are feeling symptoms of illness, as a safety precaution.

We will be evaluating the situation on an ongoing basis and will reopen the labs once it is safe, in line with official advice.
