Shakira was 8 years old when her father's business collapsed.

The family lost nearly everything. Cars. Furniture. A kid old enough to understand what was gone.

So her father took her to a park in Barranquilla.

He showed her children who lived there. No shoes. No parents. Sleeping outside.

He wanted her to see that there was a floor far below the one her family had just fallen to. That losing the furniture was not the bottom.

She has talked about those kids her whole life. The bare feet are the part she kept coming back to.

She made a promise to herself that day. If she ever made it, she was coming back for them.

She was 8. Nobody expects that promise to survive.

1995. She released an album called Pies Descalzos. It means barefoot. Named for the children in that park.

The record broke her across Latin America. It is the album that made her Shakira.

So the money came from a record named after street kids.

1997. She was not yet 21. She started a foundation and gave it the same name. Pies Descalzos. The Barefoot Foundation.

Same children. Album, charity, promise. All one thing.

Here is what Colombia looked like then.

Millions of people pushed off their land by armed groups. Families running with nothing. Ending up in shantytowns on the edge of cities.

Their kids had no school. In a lot of cases no food either.

So she did not just build classrooms.

Free education. Hot meals every day, because children were turning up too hungry to learn. Uniforms. Books. Counseling for kids who had seen things kids should not see. After school programs.

And classes for the parents. Help starting a small business. The idea being that a family should not need her forever.

2003. The foundation launched a nutrition program for displaced children. That same year UNICEF made her a Goodwill Ambassador.

2004. The first Pies Descalzos school opened in Quibdó, in Chocó. One of the poorest places in the country.

A girl named Yuberlys Parra started there at 5 years old.

Her mother Esperanza worked in the school kitchen. That is how she raised two children.

Yuberlys stayed in that school. Then she went to university.

She graduated as an environmental engineer.

Shakira posted the photos. The little girl in first grade. The young woman holding her degree.

Now here is the number that matters most.

In Colombia, only about 4 out of every 10 students finish school.

In her schools it is 8 out of 10. And they keep going into higher education.

It is not a building. It works.

Then more schools. Cartagena. Barranquilla. Soacha. La Guajira.

2014. A school in a poor neighborhood of Cartagena. 1,700 children, from daycare all the way to high school.

2023. A new school in her own hometown of Barranquilla. Over 6,000 square meters. Room for about 1,000 students a year. She said it felt like a new dream coming true.

The foundation also built early childhood centers for babies and toddlers. Playgrounds made out of recycled plastic. It teamed up with 30 other organizations to put 13 early childhood centers across Colombia.

9 schools now.

More than 152,000 children and young people have come through. More than 880,000 family members reached. In 2024 alone, over 28,000 kids.

December 2025. 415 students graduated from her schools in a single year. La Guajira. Barranquilla. Quibdó. Cartagena. She called it the best Christmas present she got.

January 2025. Fighting between armed groups in the Catatumbo region drove more than 50,000 people from their homes.

Same story as 1997. Different year.

She committed to build a school there.

February 20 2025. She brought her world tour home to Barranquilla.

She gave 4,000 seats to students and families from her schools. Free. Kids from Quibdó, Cartagena, La Guajira.

Children who a few years earlier had nowhere to go in the morning stood in that stadium and sang every word.

Including the ones off the album named after kids with no shoes.

Think about the loop. A girl of 8 sees barefoot children in a park. Makes a promise nobody was holding her to.

Names her album after them. The album makes her rich.

Names her charity after them. Spends the next 30 years handing the money back.

Barefoot kids. Barefoot album. Barefoot schools.

So the next time that song comes on somewhere, it is not just a song. It is a receipt.
