Don’t Take the Bait: How to Avoid Phishing
Thankfully, phishing attacks are preventable, as nearly all email attacks require the recipient to physically click on a link or open an attachment. Cybersecurity provider Proofpoint’s ‘2019 Human Factor’ report states 99 percent of all cyberattacks relied on human interaction to execute. You can avoid becoming a victim through your actions—don’t click on a link or open an attachment in a phishing email. Here are some red flags to help you detect phishing scams:

• The sender is someone you don’t ordinarily communicate with
• You don’t recognize any of the other recipients of the email
• The email concerns something outside of your job responsibilities
• The message within the email is vague
• It contains an attachment you didn’t request or weren’t expecting
• The domain of the sender’s email address has typos (for example, .com)
• Hovering over a hyperlink with your mouse reveals a website unrelated to the sender
• The hyperlink contains a misspelling of a known website (for example, .com
• It requests you provide personally identifiable information or account numbers and passwords

While you can educate yourself and your employees about how to detect phishing emails, people make mistakes. We receive a lot of emails each week…it’s easy to let your guard down. Therefore, the best way to protect yourself from phishing scams is through technology. Our DarkWeb ID service comes with a phishing education and training program for all of your employees. Educating your employees on what to do and not to do, could save you time and money. Call us today 928 328 1132 or email [email protected] for more information.

Data Breaches Expected to Cost Businesses $5 Trillion by 2024

By now, every business should be aware of the costs associated with a data breach. Unfortunately, such damages are not being contained. Instead, they are rising steadily, culminating in a $5 trillion price tag by 2024, according to the latest report from Juniper Research.

A recent report, “The Future of Cybercrime & Security,” found that regulatory fines and lost business will be the primary drivers of this expense.

Consumers continually demonstrate a disdain for platforms that can’t protect their data, making opportunity cost one of the most arduous, often immeasurable consequences of a data breach.

At the same time, the report notes that cybercrimes are likely to accelerate as hackers deploy increasingly sophisticated technology, like AI, to perpetuate even more disruptive cybercrimes.

However, Juniper Research found that cybersecurity-related expenditures are only expected to increase by 8% over the next four years, meaning that enterprises are turning to other methodologies to protect their data. Most prominently, the report concluded, employee awareness training is seen as the most efficient and cost-effective way to protect a company’s data.

Regardless of the technique, one truth is certain. The cybersecurity landscape will not look the same in four years, and every business needs to be prepared to adapt and meet the shifting challenges of its time.

Ransomware Running Amok
Ransomware has crippled the workflows of municipalities across America in 2019, with major cities such as
Baltimore, Atlanta, and Albany, New York among the victims of these cyber-attacks. However, things have really heated
up this summer, as more than 20 towns in one state alone had their computer systems taken hostage in August.
Authorities believe a single source is responsible for a coordinated ransomware attack that targeted 22 local
governments in the state of Texas, demanding they pay ransoms of hundreds of thousands of dollars to restore
access to their computer systems.
Unfortunately, ransomware is not limited to government entities as targets. In fact, small businesses face a much
bigger threat, as they are the primary targets of these attacks. According to a report by Beazley Breach Response
Services, 71 percent of ransomware attacks in 2018 targeted small businesses, with an average ransom demand of
$116,000. If ransomware can circumvent the cyberdefenses of a state capital such as Albany and incapacitate their
digital operations, most small- and medium-sized businesses are ill-equipped to defend themselves from these
threats.
Ransomware can be countered, but it takes diligence on the part of an organization. In fact with our BDR service your data is encrypted and cannot be touched by current ransomware. First, employees should be educated about the threat of ransomware and how to detect and avoid falling victim to phishing emails. Second, IT security measures—such as internal firewalls, two-factor authentication, and regular software updates—should be employed to help mitigate risks. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, regularly backup your data. If hackers do get past your defenses and encrypt your data, having a copy of your data will minimize the damage done and prevent you from having to pay the ransom to regain access to your files.
