Ypsi Tech Works is going all virtual! We've made the decision to give up our office space at the Peace Plaza building at 124 Pearl St. If you know of anyone looking for a great, reasonably priced small office space with the best view of Downtown Ypsilanti, please let me know. I am also trying to sell off some furniture that will not be making the move to my home office. It includes a 5' oval conference table with 4 chairs, a 4' desk with a chair, a 9' wood workbench/cabinets (it comes apart to fit down the elevator), and some smaller items like a large whiteboard, a short horizontal filing cabinet, a metal technician stool, and "waiting room" chairs. If your business runs Fortigate firewalls, be sure to pay attention to the news about the recent vulnerability that is being actively exploited.

Fortinet publicly disclosed today a critical FortiManager API vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-47575, that was exploited in zero-day attacks to steal sensitive files containing configurations, IP addresses, and credentials for managed devices.

Thoughts from a conversation I had at a networking event yesterday: If you own a small business, and have not yet turned on multi-factor authentication (MFA, also known as 2-factor authentication or 2FA) for your business email systems by now, then you are being negligent about the risks to your business from a possible email account compromise. If you use Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, then it is simple for your IT people to configure. If you use a different email system, ask about MFA and if its not an option then you should look into making a change. If you just want it handled for you, then please just give me a call.

Tis the season for small business owners to think about their goals for the coming year. This time around, spare a few minutes to think about the different risks to your business and your plans and then make a few basic response plans. One incident response plan should be what you should do if you discover your email platform has been compromised. Who do you call first? Your IT company, your Insurance Company, your lawyer, the police, someone else? Having a plan in writing can save you valuable time and keep you from making mistakes in a high stress situation.
