If a laptop missed its last two updates, would anyone on your team know?

Verizon's 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report found that 31% of breaches now start with an exploited software vulnerability, a flaw an attacker used before it was fixed. That's more than start with a stolen password. Every device on your network needs its updates, including the ones nobody thinks about.

It's Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this is a good week to ask who's checking.

Is your data backed up, or is it just in the cloud?

Those aren't the same thing. Even Microsoft's Services Agreement tells users to "regularly backup" what they store on its services (Microsoft, 2025).

CISA's 3-2-1 rule keeps it simple: three copies of your important files, on two different types of storage, with one copy off-site (CISA). The cloud counts as one type. It isn't all three.

And a backup only matters if it restores. Of the organizations hit by ransomware in Veeam's 2025 survey, only 10% got back more than 90% of their data (Veeam, 2025).

When did your team last test a restore?

The cart is fine. The battery isn't. So it gets parked in the hallway, and the nurse charts at a shared computer instead.

That's the kind of problem we wrote about all September: small device issues on hospital floors that never show up as an outage, only as lost minutes. A scanner goes missing. A barcode gets typed in by hand because it won't read, and the unit's scan rate dips without anyone noticing.

None of them needs a big project. They need someone watching the whole fleet, so a weak battery or a dip in scan rate gets caught before it costs a shift.

If a unit's scan rate started slipping next month, how would you find out?

GS1 Sunrise 2027 is 15 months away โ€” and it changes the rules for POS and warehouse scanning.

By December 31, 2027, retail point-of-sale systems industry-wide must be capable of scanning 2D barcodes ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ traditional 1D codes. That means products flowing through your facility โ€” from suppliers already working with Walmart, Dillard's, and Tesco โ€” will increasingly carry 2D codes your current laser scanners may not be able to read.

This isn't a distant IT problem. Hardware assessments, budget cycles, and procurement lead times are already compressing. The teams that start now will be ready. The ones that don't will be scrambling.

Adirondack Networks offers ๐—™๐—ฅ๐—˜๐—˜ scanner readiness assessments for warehousing & logistics teams across the Northeast.

Twenty-one minutes is not a crisis, which is exactly why it gets absorbed. Somebody walks the handheld down to IT, borrows one off another floor, or charts on paper and catches up. No ticket gets filed.

The same research found roughly a quarter of them unable to track their devices at all.

Central management changes what happens inside those twenty-one minutes. The device is visible, the fix is pushed, and it is working again before anyone has walked anywhere. ๐Ÿ”ง

We close out next Tuesday. Follow along for that one.

The part of a device refresh that takes months isn't ordering. It's finding out what you actually have.

Procurement? Deployment? Those are knowns. What stretches a refresh out is discovery โ€” no current inventory means your first stretch goes to figuring out what's in the building, what's outdated, and what can actually run Windows 11.

Here's where the numbers sit right now:

๐Ÿ”น 21% of Windows devices are still running Windows 10 โ€” eight months after Microsoft ended support. (Lansweeper, July 2026)
๐Ÿ”น 2.8% of those remaining devices can't be upgraded at all. They need to be purchased, not patched โ€” and they come with hardware lead times.
๐Ÿ”น Extended Security Updates cost $61 per device in Year 1. That bill doubles in Year 2, and doubles again in Year 3.

One more date worth flagging: the consumer ESU bridge expires October 13, 2026. That's less than 30 days from now.

Done reactively, a refresh becomes months of one-off purchases, coverage gaps, and timelines you can't predict. Done from a real inventory list, it's weeks โ€” on a schedule you control.

If you don't know exactly what you have, that's the place to start.

๐Ÿ“‹ Message us for a free inventory assessment โ€” and let's build a refresh plan that works for you.

Scan rate is one of the few numbers in a hospital that reports directly on the state of your device fleet. It is rarely read that way.

Two causes worth checking. FDA has required a 2D data matrix barcode on drug packages since November 2017, and a 1D laser scanner cannot read one at all. And standard device housings were never built for twenty disinfectant wipes a day. They harden and crack, and a cracked scanner is a failing scanner. ๐Ÿ”

Pull your scan-rate report broken out by unit instead of by hospital. The floors with the worst numbers usually have the oldest hardware on them.

Part three of our medical device series. Follow our page for the rest of it, and for the next one.

Ever retrained the same employee twice โ€” and gotten the exact same ticket a third time? ๐Ÿค”

That's probably not a training problem. It's a device problem wearing a training problem's name tag.

Out-of-date software. Settings that reset on their own. Hardware no one was watching until it broke.

A 2026 CISO survey put the cost of endpoint downtime at $19M per hour. Organizations that proactively manage their device fleets see 20โ€“40% fewer help desk tickets.

The fix isn't a fourth training session. It's a fleet health check.

If it's been a while since anyone actually looked โ€” not assumed โ€” we can walk through it together. ๐Ÿ‘‡

You're not just buying a cart. You're deciding how many times you'll buy one.

Budget-tier mobile powered carts need replacing every 5 to 7 years. Premium-built carts run 10 to 15 โ€” nearly twice as long. (DSI Direct, 2026)

That gap isn't just time. It's a full second purchase your team either plans for or gets blindsided by.

NewCastle Systems mobile powered carts are built for the long haul:
โœ… Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries with an 8โ€“10 year service life
โœ… Hot-swap systems for 24/7 uptime โ€” no shift interruptions
โœ… Rugged construction made for demanding clinical environments
โœ… Standardize your fleet and cut maintenance costs by up to 55%

Lower total cost. Fewer disruptions. One less replacement cycle on your capital plan.

Part 3 is coming next Tuesday โ€” the scan that has to be right the first time. ๐Ÿ”ฌ

What does your current cart fleet actually cost you over 10 years? Drop a comment or message us โ€” we'll run the numbers for free.

21 minutes. Every shift. Every nurse.

That's how long clinical staff spend searching for misplaced equipment, according to a GE HealthCare study. That's real time โ€” taken from patients, not from paperwork.

Your facility's hardware sees this happening. It's just not telling you.

This month, we're launching a 5-part series on exactly where this shows up โ€” and what fixes it. Each part is short, specific, and actionable.
