⚠️ Today is the day. As of Tuesday, October 13, Microsoft stops sending security updates to Windows 11 version 24H2 (Home and Pro).

Your PC won't shut off or stop working. But from here on, every new security hole that gets found stays open on your computer. That's how viruses and ransomware get in.

Here's the 2-minute check:
πŸ”Ž Press the Windows key, type winver, and hit Enter
❌ Says "Version 24H2"? You need to upgrade
βœ… Says 25H2 or 26H2? You're covered, nothing to do

How to upgrade:
1️⃣ Back up your important files first (external drive or cloud)
2️⃣ If your PC uses BitLocker, find your recovery key before you start
3️⃣ Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates and install version 25H2. It's supported until October 2027 and for most PCs it installs about like a normal monthly update.

Heads up: today is also Patch Tuesday, so expect your PC to want a restart tonight or tomorrow. A second restart for a Secure Boot certificate update is normal too.

Not offered the update? Upgrade failed? PC says it can't upgrade? Don't guess. Walk it in and we'll sort it out.

πŸ›‘ Your hard drive just started clicking. The worst thing you can do right now is reboot it "to see if it comes back."

Every time a failing drive powers on, it gets a little worse. A clicking hard drive is usually the read head scraping the platter where your files live. An SSD that keeps disconnecting is a controller chip failing a little more each time. The first attempt at recovery is the one most likely to work, so the goal is to make that attempt count.

The first five minutes:
βœ… Power it off and leave it off
βœ… Stop saving new files, taking photos, or installing anything
βœ… Write down what happened (did Windows ask to format it? did files just vanish?)
❌ Don't keep rebooting
❌ Don't run recovery software on a drive that's making noises
❌ Don't click "Format" when Windows asks
❌ Don't open the drive yourself

What we recover at our shop in York:
πŸ’Ύ Failed or clicking hard drives
πŸ’Ύ Dead SSDs and drives Windows can't see
πŸ’Ύ Deleted files, emptied recycle bins, formatted drives
πŸ’Ύ External USB drives, SD cards, flash drives
πŸ’Ύ Drives pulled from laptops and desktops that won't boot
πŸ“Έ Family photos and videos, QuickBooks and Outlook files, school projects

How it works: bring in the drive (or the whole computer, we'll pull it). The recoverability assessment is FREE. We image the drive first so all the real work happens on a copy, not your original. Then we tell you honestly what's recoverable and quote the recovery before anything is charged. If there's nothing to recover, you walk out with no bill. Most deleted-file and formatted-drive recoveries finish in 1–3 business days.

πŸ’» Your laptop almost always warns you before it quits. Most people just don't know what the warnings look like.

Here are the ones we see walk through our door every week:

πŸ”‹ The trackpad is bulging up or won't click right. That's often a swollen battery pushing from underneath. Stop using it and bring it in. Swollen batteries are not something to wait on.
πŸ”Œ You have to wiggle the charger to get it to charge. A loose charging port only gets worse, and eventually it stops charging at all.
πŸͺ› The hinge creaks or a crack is starting near the corner of the screen. Hinge cracks spread every time you open and close the lid.
πŸ”₯ The fan roars and the bottom gets hot doing simple things. That's usually years of dust and pet hair choking the cooling. Heat slows your laptop down and wears out the parts.
⌨️ Keys that stick or a trackpad that jumps around.
πŸ–₯️ A cracked or flickering laptop screen.

Catch these early and it's usually a straightforward fix. Wait too long, and a small problem can turn into a dead laptop.

How it works at our shop:
βœ… Walk in, no appointment needed
βœ… We run a hands-on diagnostic: $39.99 for standard laptops, $99 for gaming laptops (the diagnostic fee is separate from the repair)
βœ… We call you with the real problem and a written quote
βœ… Nothing paid starts without your okay. And if a laptop honestly isn't worth fixing, we'll tell you that too.

Most common laptop repairs are done in 1–3 business days.

🐒 "I think I need a new computer." We hear it every week, and most of the time it isn't true.

If your laptop or desktop takes five minutes to boot, freezes for ten seconds every time you open a file, or makes you wait for Chrome to show up, the problem is usually two parts: the drive and the memory. The processor is often fine.

Here's the difference in plain English:
πŸ”Ή SSD fixes "everything is slow, all the time." Old spinning hard drives have a physical arm that hunts for your files. An SSD has no moving parts, so boot, apps and file opens get dramatically faster. It's usually the biggest speed jump an older machine will ever see.
πŸ”Ή RAM fixes "it's fine until I open a bunch of stuff." Twenty browser tabs, Zoom and a Word doc at once, and the computer runs out of memory and starts dragging.
πŸ”Ή Slow at every stage? You probably need both, and that's the most common combo we install.

What we actually do:
βœ… Check what your machine can take BEFORE you buy parts (SATA vs NVMe, how much RAM it supports)
βœ… Install the SSD and clone your drive, or do a fresh Windows install with your files kept
βœ… Add RAM only if it will actually help
βœ… Update drivers, BIOS and firmware after the swap
βœ… Run a before-and-after speed benchmark so you can see the difference
βœ… Securely wipe the old drive

A 4-to-8-year-old Windows computer with a good screen and working processor is usually a great upgrade candidate. And if we don't think it's worth it on your machine, we'll tell you.

It starts with a $39.99 diagnostic ($99 for gaming PCs), and you get the exact part, labor and turnaround in writing before any paid work starts.

πŸ› οΈ Maintenance Check, Test 7 of 19: SFC Scan and Reliability History

Last call: our half-price Maintenance Check ends Wednesday, September 30.

You know the kind of problem this test is for. A program that "just closes." A blue screen once every couple of weeks. An update that fails, tries again, fails again. Nothing bad enough to bring the computer in, but annoying enough that you've started saving your work every five minutes.

Here's the good news: those problems almost always leave a trail. Windows quietly keeps a diary of every crash, freeze and failed install. Most people never know it's there.

What we actually do in this test:
πŸ”Ή Run System File Checker (SFC), a Windows tool that compares your core system files against known-good copies and repairs any that are damaged or corrupted
πŸ”Ή Open Windows' own Reliability History, which scores your PC's stability day by day and logs every app crash, Windows error and failed update
πŸ”Ή Look for patterns: the same program crashing every Tuesday, the same update failing ten times, a driver that falls over every time the PC wakes from sleep
πŸ”Ή Fix the repeat offenders instead of guessing

Why files get corrupted in the first place: a power flicker mid-update, a hard shutdown while Windows was writing something, a failing drive. The damage is small and invisible, but it adds up to "weird" behavior that no amount of restarting fixes.

Why it makes your computer better: repaired system files plus a fixed list of repeat crashes means a machine that behaves the same way every day. No more mystery shutdowns, no more lost work, and far fewer "it was fine yesterday" moments.

This is the last of our September test spotlights. One of 19 checks in our Maintenance Check, half price through Wednesday:

πŸ”Ή Hard drive health and speed tested, so a failing drive gets caught before it takes your files with it
πŸ”Ή Malicious browser extensions found and removed
πŸ”Ή Fans and case cleaned out, temperatures checked under load
πŸ”Ή Windows, your everyday apps and the BIOS brought up to date
πŸ”Ή Junk programs cleared out and your antivirus confirmed working
πŸ”Ή Corrupted system files repaired and repeat crashes tracked down
..and more. 19 checks in all.

Regularly $139. Through tomorrow, $69.50.

If your computer has been slow, noisy, crashy, or just hasn't had a checkup in a while, this is the time. Drop it off tomorrow by 5 PM to get the sale price.

🧹 Maintenance Check, Test 6 of 19: PUPs and Next-Gen Antivirus

Two questions most people can't answer about their own computer: what's running on it that you never meant to install, and is anything actually watching for threats right now?

Start with PUPs β€” "potentially unwanted programs." They're not quite viruses, which is exactly why they stick around. They ride in on free downloads: you install a PDF converter or a game and, three checked boxes later, you've also got a search toolbar, a "PC optimizer" that finds 2,000 "problems" and wants a credit card, and a coupon helper that watches your shopping. None of it announces itself. It just starts with Windows, eats memory, and quietly sends data home.

What we actually do in this test:
πŸ”Ή Scan for PUPs with tools built to find the stuff regular antivirus lets slide β€” toolbars, fake optimizers, "driver updaters," bundled adware
πŸ”Ή Go through the installed programs list line by line and flag anything you don't recognize or never meant to install
πŸ”Ή Check what launches at startup and what's running in the background, and trim the hogs
πŸ”Ή Confirm you have a current next-generation antivirus β€” installed, licensed, and actually pulling updates
πŸ”Ή Catch the classic gap: the free trial that came with the computer, expired two years ago, and has been showing "protected" in a corner nobody looks at

That last one is more common than you'd think. An expired antivirus can look almost exactly like a working one. Meanwhile nothing is watching. And sometimes we find the opposite problem β€” two security programs installed at once, fighting each other and slowing the whole machine down.

"Next-gen" matters too. Older antivirus mostly matched files against a list of known bad ones. Newer protection also watches behavior β€” a program suddenly encrypting all your files, or injecting itself into your browser β€” so it can stop threats that aren't on any list yet.

Why it makes your computer better: less junk running means more memory for what you actually use, a faster boot, and fewer pop-ups. And confirmed, current protection means something is actually on guard.

πŸ›‘οΈ Maintenance Check, Test 5 of 19: Windows, Third-Party and BIOS Updates

Almost everyone believes this one is already handled. Windows updates itself, right? Sometimes. We open machines every week where Windows Update has been quietly failing for eight months and the owner had no idea, because a failed update doesn't put a red light on your desktop. It just tries again, fails again, and gives up.

Here's why that matters more than almost anything else on this list. The overwhelming majority of malware doesn't break in through some brand-new genius exploit. It walks through a hole that was found, reported and patched months ago β€” on machines that never took the patch. The fix already exists. It just never got installed.

What we actually do in this test:
πŸ”Ή Check that Windows Update is genuinely completing, not just claiming to be up to date β€” we read the update history and look for the ones that failed, rolled back, or have been retrying for months
πŸ”Ή Repair the stuck ones. A jammed update queue usually needs the component store cleared out and the failed pieces re-fetched by hand
πŸ”Ή Update the third-party software that never nags you loudly enough: browsers, Java, Adobe Reader, Zoom β€” the everyday apps that touch the internet and are the most-attacked programs on any home PC
πŸ”Ή Look up your BIOS/firmware version and compare it to what your manufacturer currently ships for that exact model
πŸ”Ή Write down every version we found and every version we left you on, so you have a record of where the machine actually stands

The BIOS part is the one people have never had done. That's the deepest layer of software on your computer β€” it runs before Windows even starts. Manufacturers push firmware updates for real reasons: security holes underneath the operating system, but also stability bugs, sleep and wake problems, fans running wrong, memory that won't run at its rated speed. A machine that randomly won't wake up, or blue-screens for no reason anyone can find, is sometimes just three years behind on firmware.

Why it makes your computer better: you end up on a machine where the known holes are actually closed, the crashes with a known fix are actually fixed, and nothing is sitting in a broken retry loop burning CPU in the background. It's the least glamorous test we run and one of the two or three that matter most.

🌑️ Maintenance Check, Test 4 of 19: Fans, Case and Temperatures

This is the test that surprises people the most. A computer that felt fast two years ago and feels slow today often has nothing wrong with the software at all. It is choking on dust.

Here is what actually happens. Your PC pulls air in, across the heatsinks, and back out. Everything in that air comes with it β€” dust, pet hair, carpet fuzz. It packs into the fins of the heatsink like felt, and the fans gum up until they spin slower than they should. Once the processor gets too hot, Windows doesn't crash or warn you. It quietly slows the chip down on purpose so it doesn't cook itself. That's called thermal throttling, and it feels exactly like "my computer got old."

What we actually do in this test:
πŸ”Ή Open the case and clear dust out of the fans, the heatsink fins and the intake filters β€” the packed-in stuff a can of air just pushes deeper
πŸ”Ή Spin and test every fan individually, listening for the wobble and grinding that means a bearing is on its way out
πŸ”Ή Log the real temperature of the CPU, the GPU and the drives β€” not at idle, but under load, while the machine is actually working hard
πŸ”Ή Compare those numbers against what that specific hardware is supposed to run at, so we know whether it's fine, borderline or in trouble
πŸ”Ή Fix the airflow β€” route cables out of the intake path, make sure the fans are pointed the right way, and check the case isn't sitting against a wall or on carpet

Why it makes your computer better: heat is the single biggest thing shortening the life of the parts inside. Every degree you take off buys time on the processor, the graphics card and the drive that's holding your photos. And the speed comes back immediately β€” when the chip stops throttling, it runs at full speed again. No new parts, no reinstall. Just air moving the way it was designed to.
