Robert De Niro stood at a First Amendment concert in New York and led a thousand people in chanting four words at Donald Trump. “shut the f**k up.”

A free speech absolutist, using his own free speech to make the whole room scream: shut the f**k up.

The 82-year-old turned it into a call and response. He'd quote the president, then cue the audience.

"When I hear Trump say, as he did a few days ago, 'I don't think about Americans' financial situation, not even a little bit,' I say, 'Shut the f**k up.'"

The crowd roared. So he kept going.

"On Wednesday, Trump said, 'I love the inflation.' Now say it with me." The room answered as one.

That one was real. On June 10, asked in the Oval Office about inflation hitting a 4.2 percent annual rate, the highest in three years, Trump didn't dodge. "You know what I really love? I love the inflation," he said, blaming the war in Iran and promising prices would crash once it ended.

De Niro fed the room one more. "Trump said he won the 2020 election. Ready?" And the whole place shouted it back.

The four words weren't an accident. They're a callback to his 1988 film "Midnight Run," the "two words" bit his fans know by heart. He took a movie gag and handed it to a thousand people as a weapon.

Then he got serious, and this is the part that stings.

"Loving our country is starting to sound like an abused spouse saying they love their abuser," he said.

He laid out why. A country that starts inhumane wars and kills thousands of innocents. A country that strips health care from millions and funnels the savings to what he called the Trump-Epstein class. A country that sends masked militias to shoot people in the street and rip families apart.

This is the whole move. De Niro isn't arguing policy. He's naming a betrayal. The country that's supposed to protect you is the one doing the harm, and you're expected to say thank you while it happens.

"I want to love my country again," he said. "I want my country back."

Trump's answer, every single time De Niro gets under his skin, is the same small thing. After the actor delivered his own counter to the State of the Union earlier this year, the most powerful man on the planet called him "a sick and demented person."

That's the entire reaction, every time. Our president, quite literally, has the temperament of a toddler.
