OpenAI said its upcoming AI model, Astra, may have reached a level where it could autonomously carry out advanced cyberattacks or exploit critical software vulnerabilities, prompting the company to pause some development work, tighten security measures, and move testing into isolated environments while further evaluations continue. The decision comes amid broader industry concerns about increasingly capable AI systems following recent reports of AI agents breaching systems during cybersecurity testing, though OpenAI said Astra was not involved in the recent Hugging Face hacking incident.

Cybercriminals are exploiting AI chatbot hallucinations through a tactic called "phantom squatting," registering fake domains that AI tools mistakenly generate and using them for phishing attacks. Researchers at Palo Alto Networks' Unit 42 identified more than 13,200 malicious URLs and approximately 250,000 unregistered AI-hallucinated domains that attackers could exploit. The findings highlight the importance of verifying AI-generated website links before entering passwords or other sensitive information.
