Tip Tuesday 💡

If your computer suddenly freezes, the first instinct is often to force it off immediately. In many cases, there are a couple quick steps you can try first that may close the frozen program without restarting the entire system.

Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to open Task Manager and close the program that stopped responding. You can also try Alt + F4 to close the active window.

If the system still won’t respond, restarting the computer will usually restore normal operation.

If your computer freezes regularly, that can be a sign of deeper issues such as low memory, failing storage drives, overheating, or software conflicts.

Sleep simply pauses your computer. Your programs stay open and it wakes up quickly, but it doesn't refresh the system.

Shut Down turns the computer completely off. This saves power but doesn't always clear temporary system issues.

Restart closes everything and reloads the operating system. This is often the best option when your computer is running slow or behaving strangely.

A quick restart every few days can help keep your computer running smoothly.

One of the most common scams we see involves fake “virus warning” pop-ups that suddenly appear while browsing the internet.

The message often says your computer is infected and instructs you to call a phone number immediately for support. The goal is to create urgency so people give remote access to their computer.

A few important things to remember:

• Companies like Microsoft or Apple do not call people about viruses
• Legitimate security warnings do not ask you to call a random number
• Scammers rely on fear and urgency to get people to act quickly

Sometimes these pages take over the screen and make it difficult to close the browser. If that happens, you can try the following:

Ctrl + Alt + Delete
This will open a screen where you can access the power options (sleep, restart, or shut down).

Alt + F4
This shortcut attempts to close the active window.

If you are unable to exit the page, you can force a shutdown using the power button. When restarting, do not restore previously opened pages.
