this may veer a bit dramatic, but hey - its Friday.

end of watch: kestrel

A week ago, I officially retired one of the most important pieces of equipment I’ve ever owned.

not because it became obsolete but because it didn’t come home in one piece.

this little aircraft taught me aerial photography. it documented homes, jobsites, rivers, forests, construction projects, and places I never would’ve seen from the ground. somewhere along the way it stopped feeling like a gadget and started feeling like another camera in the bag. a small flying visual companion, if you will.

I still don’t know exactly what happened. I’ve replayed the flight a dozen times in my head. maybe one day the logs or the wreckage will tell the story. or maybe they won’t.

either way, every scratch on its airframe was earned honestly.

thousands of images.

countless flights.

zero regrets.

fair winds, kestrel.

thanks for the perspective.

(on a very real note, crashing this little guy for the final time kind of gutted me last week. it’s been an experience I’m thankful to have had for the past 2+ years. I’ll be attempting a repair, but it doesn’t look likely given the damage to the chassis and wiring. RIP and fair winds little homie)

marketing autopsy // case file 007

with the odyssey arriving in theaters one week from today, now seemed like the right time to close the file on the marketing campaign and open one on the marketing itself.

every campaign tells two stories.

the one you intended to tell.

and the one your audience actually discussed.

this isn’t a review of the odyssey.

it isn’t about whether controversial creative decisions were right or wrong.

it’s a postmortem on campaign ex*****on.

how a film with every advantage imaginable—christopher nolan, homer, imax 70mm, matt damon, practical filmmaking, and enormous audience goodwill—managed to spend months generating conversations that often had very little to do with the film itself.

the diagnosis?

mixed messaging.

reactive communications.

avoidable distractions.

missed symbolic opportunities.

none of which necessarily prevent success.

in fact, I still expect the odyssey to be a massive box office success.

that’s precisely why this case study is interesting.

great products often overcome mediocre marketing.

they just shouldn’t have to.

the final slides aren’t simply a critique, they’re the campaign I would’ve tried to run instead.

sometimes the smallest symbolic decisions—like where you choose to premiere a film rooted in one of civilization’s foundational stories—communicate just as loudly as the biggest ad buys.

findings archived. lessons retained.

case file 007 is now closed.

what campaign should we dissect next?
