What if the phishing email really did come from Microsoft?

That’s exactly what happened in a recent phishing attack uncovered by IRONSCALES.

Attackers abused a legitimate Microsoft Clarity feature to send a fake PayPal transaction notice. The email:

→ Was genuinely sent by Microsoft
→ Passed SPF, DKIM, and DMARC authentication
→ Contained a legitimate Microsoft link
→ Still led the recipient toward a scam

There was no suspicious domain or malicious attachment to give it away.

The red flag was context.

A Microsoft analytics platform sending a PayPal billing notice simply didn’t make sense—and the recipient recognized it and reported the message.

It’s an important reminder that modern phishing attacks increasingly exploit the platforms and trust signals organizations rely on every day.

Technology matters. But so do context, employee awareness, and a layered approach to cybersecurity.

82% of denied cyber insurance claims came down to one thing: MFA that didn’t hold up under investigation.

A single control attested to on the policy application, but not deployed where it mattered.

Here’s how the gap forms:

When you renew cyber insurance, the questionnaire asks dozens of yes-or-no questions about your security posture: Is MFA enabled across all systems? Is endpoint detection on every device? Are backups tested and isolated? Is incident response documented and rehearsed?

Every one of those questions maps to a NIST Cybersecurity Framework control, translated into procurement language. MFA is just the one that fails most visibly, because it’s binary, easy to claim, and easy to miss in practice.

Most SMBs answer “yes” without verifying. The IT person confirms it’s deployed; the MSP confirms it’s covered; the box gets checked. Nobody walks the environment to make sure.

When the incident hits, the business ends up paying out-of-pocket for costs the policy was supposed to cover.

The fix is simple: verify what your policy says you have against what’s actually in your environment… BEFORE you need to file a claim, not after.

SOC 2 engagements often start with a panicked phone call.

A major prospect has sent over a security questionnaire. It asks for a current SOC 2 Type 2 report, and the deal hinges on getting one… fast.

The problem: a Type 2 report can’t be produced on demand. A Type 2 audit covers an observation period of 3 to 12 months. The clock starts when the controls go live, not when the customer asks. Auditors carry 4-to-8-week scheduling lead times on top of that. Rushed implementations cost 30-50% more than planned ones.

And the market won’t wait:

→ 77% of organizations now require SOC 2 (or equivalent) from their vendors
→ More than 1/3 of companies have lost deals to a missing security certification
→ Most customers won’t wait 6’12 months for a vendor to produce a report. They’ll sign with someone who already has one.

If your business sells to mid-market or enterprise customers, SOC 2 isn’t a question of “if.”

73% of the U.S. defense industrial base is made up of small businesses.

Roughly 230,000 of them are now subject to CMMC.

Most don’t know they are.

CMMC requirements flow down from prime contractors to subcontractors at every tier. A small business doesn’t have to call itself a “defense contractor” to be in scope. It only has to handle the relevant data somewhere in its work for a federal customer (even several layers removed).

The first time many SMBs learn this? A prime contractor’s 60-day ultimatum to prove Level 2 readiness or be cut from the supply chain.

Three signals CMMC may already apply to you:
→ Any of your customers work with the federal government, even indirectly
→ Your contracts reference DFARS, FAR, ITAR, or EAR
→ You’ve been asked to complete a security questionnaire as a condition of bidding

The penalties for getting this wrong include treble damages, contract termination, and personal liability for executives. A breach isn’t required to trigger any of this. An inaccurate self-reported security score is enough on its own.

One Director of Manufacturing recently admitted to us: “The CMMC requirements are extremely unclear and very challenging for me. And I don’t actually have much support in that area in the company.”
