Ever extracted multiple parallel features - curbs, sidewalks, painted line…and everything looks fine until you build the surface?

Suddenly you’re dealing with uneven vertex spacing, misaligned vertices, and an inconsistent mesh, even though each element was extracted correctly.

The culprit? Vertices not aligned with profiles

That’s where TopoDOT’s Drape to Intersection comes in.

By using a set of intersector lines (cross-sections), you can:
🟢 Align all vertices across multiple elements
🟢 Enforce consistency between features
🟢 Transform messy geometry into a clean, structured model

Before: inconsistent vertices → noisy surface
After: perfectly aligned vertices → clean, reliable mesh

And the best part? It works regardless of how the linework was created.

At the end of the day, that’s the TopoDOT magic. It’s not just tools - and an end-to-end workflow to keep you efficient and your deliverables high-quality.

This week, Ted Knaak continues our Ted’s Thoughts series by posing a question that invites you to the ongoing discussion of innovation.

"Welcome to Ted’s Thoughts.

After last week’s introductory post, I have to admit to feeling the pressure. So, let’s kick things off with an observation and question many of us in the survey industry may be asking ourselves.

Modern survey technology, specifically laser scanning, has pushed us into the world of “big survey data”. We know that point clouds are essentially 3D images that contain an incredible amount of information. The potential value of that information is obvious.

And here is the question:

Are we effectively realizing the full value of modern point cloud data? Or are we using this data to produce the same traditional deliverables?

The question become even more interesting when viewed through the lens of Clayton Christensen’s book, The Innovator’s Dilemma--a personal favorite. One of the book’s very powerful ideas is that

Good companies can fail to innovate not because they are poorly managed, but because they listen carefully to existing customers, focus on current margins, and allocate capital rationally.

This statement might seem counterintuitive, but is it? Is today’s survey business model limiting the untapped potential of big survey data? I’d like to hear your thoughts."

The next chapter of TopoDOT Solutions is more than new tools or features. It's about driving the conversation forward for the entire industry.

Our President, Ted Knaak, is kicking off a weekly series sharing his thoughts on innovation, business growth, and where modern surveying is heading next. More importantly, he wants to hear from you.

"Hello, I’m Ted Knaak, President of TopoDOT Solutions. After 30+ years in a very interesting niche of the geomatics industry, I have always been intrigued by it being such a fertile ground for innovation. Thus I’d like to invite you to a conversation about innovation within the rapidly growing field of modern survey.

Innovation: the process of translating new ideas, methods, or inventions into practical, viable solutions that create real-world value.

Not a technology expert? That’s just fine. Because as the definition above states, Innovation is a “process” creating real world value. And “business” is the vehicle for sharing this value with the world. In fact, it is from the business perspective where my experience and contributions will be most interesting.

So while I enjoy sharing my ideas, I am much more interested in yours. Therefore, look out for my next post, and please join me in this on-going conversation and exchange of ideas."

Follow us so you don't miss his weekly updates! And if you’d like to continue the conversation, leave a comment or drop us a message. We’d love to hear from you.

In this episode of TopoDOT TV, we sat down with Mike Patterson from the Missouri DOT at TUC 26 to get his take on his very first users conference, and why he’s excited to bring TopoShare back to his team.

Supporting DOTs is literally in our name. We know the high stakes they deal with: tight deadlines, massive datasets, and the responsibility of maintaining thousands of miles of state roads.

With TopoDOT and TopoShare, our goal isn't just to help teams like Mike's deliver projects faster. It's about giving them a repeatable process to manage and protect that data for the long haul.

Want to hear how other agencies are tackling what's next? Head over to our YouTube channel to watch Mike's full interview, along with 30+ other TopoDOT TV episodes - which, funnily enough, is right around the number of DOTs we partner with every single day.

We at TopoDOT Solutions always strive to provide the best service and support to our users, building a trustworthy and reliable community to rely on.

Take it from one of our long-time users and TUC attendees, Jeff Clay, PLS and Reality Capture Lead at TWM, Inc. Below is his testimonial of the TUC experience and joining the TopoDOT community.

“Ever since the first TUC conference I attended, I felt welcome as a part of the TopoDOT community. They are one of the best groups of people I have ever had the privilege of working with and consistently impress. A lot of people may see that it's a team of software developers, but they're first and foremost a team of problem solvers. They have very creative solutions to complex problems and that's sometimes what it takes to be successful!”
- Jeff Clay, PLS

We appreciate the kind words from Jeff. It’s our community that drives our team to show up every day to make our users more successful!
