Imagine answering the phone and hearing your grandson crying. He says he has been in an accident, is in trouble, or desperately needs money. He sounds frightened. He knows your name. The voice is unmistakably his.

Except it may not be him at all.

Artificial intelligence can now create a convincing copy of someone’s voice from short recordings found in videos, social media posts, voicemails, or other online content. Scammers use these cloned voices to manufacture emergencies and pressure families into acting before they have time to think.

They may claim your loved one:
🚔 Has been arrested and needs bail money
🚑 Was injured and needs help paying medical expenses
🚗 Was involved in an accident
✈️ Is stranded somewhere
📵 Cannot speak for long or call from their normal number
🤫 Needs you to keep the situation secret
The details may change, but the goal is always the same: create panic, demand immediate action, and prevent you from checking the story.

Before this happens, create a private family password. 🔐

Choose a word or phrase that your immediate family will remember but that strangers cannot easily discover online. Do not use birthdays, pet names, schools, hometowns, or information posted publicly.

If you receive an alarming call:
✋ Stop and take a breath.
📵 Hang up, even if the caller tells you not to.
📞 Call your loved one directly using a number already saved in your phone.
👥 Contact another trusted family member.
🔐 Ask for the private family password.

💳 Never send gift cards, cryptocurrency, cash, wire transfers, or account information because someone is pressuring you.

🚔 Contact law enforcement if you believe someone is attempting to scam or threaten your family.

Scammers depend on fear and urgency. Taking a few minutes to verify the situation can protect your family from losing thousands of dollars.
