Syncretic

Syncretic We are network services and security firm. We take pride in protecting our customers' networks and intellectual property, and providing excellent service.

Syncretic has built our client base and reputation based on two primary business models: Network Services and Product Development. Our Network Services Group currently supports over forty customers in the Philadelphia Metropolitan area, including Delaware and New Jersey. For many clients, we act as their main IT department. For others, we act as a leveraged, 2nd tier partner to their existing IT r

esources. Our Software Engineering Team has developed many software applications since our inception in 1997. A few key examples include, a retirement planning product used by the federal government, an absence tracking and substitute placement system used by school systems in the United States, Britain, and Australia, and an Equities Trading product used by traders on the floors of the exchanges to trade millions of shares of stock on a daily basis. At Syncretic we have built a complete team of experienced professionals that can offer turnkey technology solutions. Our clients are small, medium, and large companies. Syncretic has built thousand dollar systems for some companies and million dollar systems for others – our emphasis is always on client acceptance and use of the product. Syncretic builds systems to meet our customers' current and future needs within a budget set by the customer. We will do what it takes to build a successful system. Syncretic Software's main goal is to perform services that provide real business benefits to our clients. We strive to make heroes of our clients. We look for opportunities to provide our clients with a return on the investment that they make with us.

Steve Gibson did a great job of covering the National Public Data massive breach. You can find his podcast and show notes for Episode #988 here: https://lnkd.in/egB3YxeB

TLDR: On August 6th, Wolf Technology Group () tweeted: “National Public Data, a service by Jerico Pictures Inc., suffered a massive breach. Hacker “Fenice” leaked 2.9 billion records with personal details, including full names, addresses, and SSNs in plain text. The breach poses significant risks for identity theft and financial fraud. Jerico Pictures Inc. faces potential lawsuits and legal challenges due to the incident.”

Steve suggests going to this site to see if your private data was included: https://npd.pentester.com/

Everyone should have a plan. Here’s a plan to use to avoid being scammed:

1) Don’t panic. They want you to panic.
2) Take a deep breath and slow things down. They don’t want you to slow things down. They want you to act irrationally without thinking.
3) Take down their name, institution, and phone number.
4) Explain you must call them back – tell them you are dealing with a personal crisis (you will be if you don’t follow your plan) and must clean up that mess first.
5) Do not call them back on the number they gave you nor the caller ID on your phone.
6) Call a trusted advisor, your bank, your spouse (family member), or other financial institution on a known or published number from a bank statement or from finding the correct institution website. Especially if they tell you not to.
7) Never give out personal information to someone who called you.
8) Don’t answer the phone for unknown numbers. Let them leave a message.

Important clues/actions:

1) When they tell you don’t trust anyone – Don’t trust them!
2) When they tell you not to call anyone about this situation – Hang up.
3) When they tell you they are from a federal agency, sheriff, police, or CIA. Hang up.
4) When they tell you there will be consequences – Tell them you’ve dealt with consequences before. You can handle it. Then hang up.

I’m still trying to understand why I fell for it.

Are you paying attention to the changes Google is making to advertising and Chrome? Remember “Cookies?” Remember how “Cookies” could be used by websites and advertises to gather information about you? Big changes are going on behind the scenes (in Chrome).

Third-party “Cookies” will soon be end of life. Advertising auctions within your Chrome browser (in the background) will be the new way advertisers target you. Yes. Your browser is doing more than you know.

Is this bad? Not necessarily. There’s a better privacy component to the new method. Steve Gibson does a great job of explaining it in his podcast this week.

Want to know more? Listen to Steve Gibson’s (GRC.com) podcast (Episode #957 | 16 Jan 2024) or read his show notes.

Chrome has begun phasing out third-party cookies, the infamous tracking tool, for 1% of its users. Why is this happening? And how good is the replacement?

Facebook is collecting data on everyone, whether you have a Facebook account or not. Why are apps free on your cell phone? The app developer is getting money from somewhere, usually data brokers – some you know, like Facebook and some you’ve never heard of. Those apps send your information (location, activity, searches) and receive money for your information.

How is it that you are receiving targets ads? How did Facebook or another app know what ad to serve you? Regardless of where you searched for something, the data brokers are gathering information to target advertising.

Delete apps you don’t use. Install apps that are useful and remove the ones that you really don’t need.

Your data is valuable. Your privacy (what’s left of it) is at stake.

Please support Consumer Reports. They do really good work.

A Consumer Reports investigation found that Facebook collected data on each user from an average of 2,230 companies.

Good article from ars Technica concerning Google's new user-tracking ad platform - more of your privacy out the window.

Take the time to read the article and opt out to the extent you can - under Privacy and Security (sic).

"feature will track the web pages you visit and generate a list of advertising topics that it will share with web pages whenever they ask, and it's built directly into the Chrome browser."

https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2023/09/googles-widely-opposed-ad-platform-the-privacy-sandbox-launches-in-chrome/

Chrome now directly tracks users, generates a "topic" list it shares with advertisers.
