Most people think hackers "break in."
In reality, they usually just log in.
The majority of business compromises don't involve sophisticated hacking. They start with one of three things:
- A stolen password
- A phishing email
- A reused password from another website that was breached years ago
Imagine someone uses the same password for Netflix, Amazon, and Microsoft 365.
Netflix gets breached.
The password gets sold online.
An attacker tries that same password against Microsoft 365.
If it works, they now have access to email, OneDrive, invoices, customer conversations, and password reset links for other accounts.
That's why long, unique passwords and multi-factor authentication matter far more than expensive antivirus software.
The best cybersecurity isn't mysterious.
It's mostly good habits.
