The most dangerous cyber threat may be one your security has never seen before.

Cybercriminals constantly change their techniques. New malware, compromised accounts and unusual network activity may not match the known threats traditional security tools have been programmed to recognize. By the time the attack becomes obvious, the damage may already be underway.

Consider a 50-person accounting firm. An employee normally logs in from New York during business hours and works with the same group of client files. Suddenly, that account logs in late at night, begins accessing hundreds of files and attempts to move data somewhere it has never sent information before.

There may not be a known virus to detect. The unusual behavior itself is the warning.

AI-enhanced security can help identify patterns and anomalies like these across systems, accounts and networks. What if the voice asking you to transfer money really does sound like your CEO?

AI-generated voice cloning and deepfake video are making impersonation scams much more convincing. An attacker may no longer need a poorly written email pretending to be an executive. With enough publicly available audio or video, AI can help create a believable imitation of someone you know and trust.

Imagine a controller receiving an urgent call that sounds like the company owner authorizing a payment. Or an employee joining a video call with someone who appears to be an executive, client or financial advisor. The old rule of “I recognized their voice” is becoming a much weaker form of verification.

AI is also being developed and deployed to fight the problem. Defensive tools can analyze audio, video and communication patterns for signs of manipulation or behavior that doesn't fit the person being impersonated. Combined with strong verification procedures—particularly for payments, credentials and sensitive information—AI can provide another warning before someone acts.

The phishing email is getting harder to spot.

There's a new kind of cyber threat hiding in plain sight: prompt injection.

Suppose you ask AI to analyze a webpage, PDF, email or document you downloaded from the internet. Hidden inside that content can be instructions designed not for you—but for the AI. Those instructions may attempt to tell the AI to ignore its existing rules, reveal information, access something it shouldn't, or take an unintended action.

It's called Indirect Prompt Injection, and the risk becomes much greater as businesses move toward Agentic AI. An AI that can only answer questions has limited ability to cause damage. An AI Agent connected to your email, files, CRM or other business systems may actually be capable of taking action.

AI can also be part of the defense.
