AITP Greater Wheeling Chapter

AITP Greater Wheeling Chapter Our Name:

Founded in 1951 as NMAA and later known as DPMA, the name Association of Information Technology Professionals, AITP, was adopted in 1996. Robert L.

In individual chapters and as a national association, AITP seeks to advance the IT Profession through professional development, support of IT education, and national policies on IT that improve society as a whole. Our History:

The year was 1951; Harry S. Truman was President of the United States. A 3 bedroom home cost $9,000.00. A new Ford listed for $1,480.00; postage was $.03; and a loaf of bre

ad cost $.16. Joe DiMaggio retired from baseball; I Love Lucy premiered; and peace talks began in Korea. In Chicago, a group of machine accountants got together and decided that the future was only beginning for the TAB machines they were operating. They were members of a local group called the Machine Accountants Association (MAA). The technology was new; something few people understood and managing this new technology was a skill that even fewer people possessed. The machine accountants recognized the need to form a professional support group, a national association, to address the growing issues of this new technology. Thus on December 26, 1951, after a constitutional convention was held in Chicago, the State of Illinois granted a charter and the National Machine Accountants Association (NMAA) was founded. Groups from Houston, Columbus, Wabash Valley, the Twin Cities, Penn-Del, and 22 others were the first to join NMAA. Jenal, systems manager for Toni Company, was elected the first International President at the 1952 First Annual Convention in Minneapolis. In 1960, the association sponsored a meeting of educators and businessmen with the purpose of establishing the Certificate in Data Processing (CDP) professional examination program. The first CDP exam was held in 1962 in New York. 1962 was also the year that the association leaders recognized the changing nature of information processing techniques brought about by the introduction of the computer. Thus, the members decided in 1962 to adopt a more progressive name, the Data Processing Management Association (DPMA), to reflect the changing industry. Always striving to promote the continued education of the members, the leadership of DPMA created the Registered Business Programmer (RBP) examination in 1970. Both the CDP and the RBP exams were given annually under the rules established by the Certification Council, at test centers in colleges and universities across North America. Eventually, DPMA decided to help establish the Institute for the Certification of Computer Professionals (ICCP) to stimulate more widespread interest and industry acceptance of the examinations. ICCP began administering the CDP program in early 1974. The association has always acknowledged the contributions of prominent professionals within the Information Technology field. Beginning in 1969 with the creation of the annual Computer Sciences Man-of-the-Year Award for outstanding contributions to the information processing industry, DPMA has established a long-standing tradition of honoring IT professionals from every aspect of the industry. This prestigious award was renamed the Distinguished Information Sciences Award in 1980 and is awarded every year at the Annual Meeting of the Members. As the industry has evolved, so has the association. Starting as the NMAA, evolving into the DPMA, and then into our current evolution in 1996 of the ASSOCIATION of INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROFESSIONALS (AITP), the association has kept pace with the changing needs and interests of our members. AITP members span every level of the IT industry from mainframe systems, to micro systems, to PC based LAN and WAN systems, to virtual systems and the internet. AITP has special niches created that cater to the special interests of our members. Our members are found in every facet of society as well. They're in colleges and universities; banking; industry; retail; the armed forces; local, state and federal governments; hospitals; and beyond.

I think all our attendees will agree that we did not want Wednesday night’s meeting of the Greater Wheeling Chapter of AITP to come to an end! Our guest speaker Bill Carter gave an awesome presentation on the MITRE ATT&CK Cybersecurity Framework. Bill is the National Director of Cybersecurity Strategy for Public Sector with Fortinet, a Cyber Reservist, Member of InfraGard, and former Deputy CISO for the state of Ohio.

Bill talked about the history of MITRE, the evolution of current cyber threats, and the need for an approach to Cybersecurity that became the ATT&CK framework. He also explained the application and utility of the MITRE ATT&CK Framework, how it applies to both Enterprise, Small Business, and Public organizations, and how you can acquire training and certifications about The Framework for free!

Once again, we welcomed some new guests and new members this month. I also received lots of good feedback regarding the recent changes in venue and food options that we have tried the past few meetings. Pending some further discussion, we will likely be setting the locations on our meeting schedule for the rest of 2026 soon.

It’s been a great start to the year! Hopefully, I will see everyone again on April 8th when we meet at Orrick’s company café.

If you are not yet a member of AITP (Greater Wheeling Chapter) and you are interested in joining, please check our website for upcoming meetings. We welcome all IT professionals, tech hobbyists, or anyone that works in an IT-adjacent profession. Technical presentations and discussion typically center around Software, AI and Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Networking, System Administration, Computer Hardware, and evolving technologies like Quantum Computing.

Wanted to share a few screenshots of the new GWC Website that is in development. Features for "phase 1" of the site will include updated look and feel (with Dark/Light modes), improved experience on mobile devices, Login and Profile management for members, automated membership renewal and management. The current PoC also includes dynamic data-driven forms that admins can create on the fly for meeting feedback, officer nominations, surveys, or whatever we need to solicit quick feedback from our members.

We are still working out some bugs but we are hoping that a version of the pictured website will be live by May 1 or earlier.

Another awesome meeting of the Greater Wheeling Chapter of AITP! Mike Ennis gave an excellent demo/presentation on "Vibe Coding" with AI (ChatGPT vs Claude). He built a simple calendar and scheduling web application and explained where each platform excelled or "ran aground" in helping him build the app.

Thank you to Mike for all the work you did to give us a great demo and some extra insight into the benefits and setbacks on using AI for programming assistance!

It was also great to see many new faces tonight - both guests and new members! I'm really looking forward to see what the rest of the year has in store. If you are an IT professional, a tech enthusiast, a hobby techie, or work in a tech-adjacent role in the Wheeling area, I encourage you to come to a meeting.

The August 13th 2025 Meeting Information

Hello Everyone,

This coming Wednesday (13th) is our meeting night.

We have been discussing having a meeting that should interest all of our members, especially since we have recently been adding a number of NEW members.

We want as many of our members & prospective members to participate in this month's meeting which involves a discussion of how the newer members view the chapter and what they would like to see what direction the chapter takes in their future. We would like to keep the momentum going. At our July meeting, we had 23 people attend and would like to see that continue to grow.

Now is our chance to help the chapter grow into a more active community & opportunity for everyone. We want to know what you think. Ideas of what YOU would like for us to do to schedule speakers of interest to YOU. And what else you might like to suggest as other things for the chapter to do as future meeting possibilities.

As we all know there are members that are willing, able, and would like to be more involved with their growth in their career and we want this to be their place to accomplish that for them. We also understand that there are members that cannot be involved more at this time for various reasons. Both are welcome, but we would like you to come to this meeting to give us your opinions and ideas for our future so we can plan better for your future with the chapter.

Bryan Mularcik will be leading our discussion and we can all be there to add and shape the chapter's future.

As always, our meeting will be at the Golden Chopsticks Restaurant on Wheeling Island beginning at 5:30 for our Networking time with dinner starting at about 6:00 with our Meeting beginning at 7:00.

We have a Virtual part scheduled to begin for the meeting portion at 7:00. If you can't come in person, please attend with your suggestions Virtually.

The cost for attending in person with the dinner is still only $20 as always.

Please be sure to RSVP whether you are attending in person or virtually.

If you are not yet a member or are thinking about becoming a member or would like to attend a meeting to see if you would like to become a member, please attend THIS meeting and help us to be a success.

Check out our website at Greater Wheeling Chapter of AITP
and take look around.

If you cannot attend but have some ideas or suggestions, just let us know what you are thinking by replying to this email so we can include them at this meeting. Or if you have any questions just let me know and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Thanks

Joe
