-Be proactive: Email your favorite professors, upperclassmen you admire, or the editor of the school paper. Connect with people who do things that interest you. People at college are surprisingly nice and are eager to help. Don't wait for life to come to you. People will treat you like an adult, so act like one.

-Study on weekends: College is harder than high school, but it's not impossible. If you work hard, you will do well, don't be afraid of tests, be afraid of laziness. If you study daily you'll have to cram less, and feel more intellectually fulfilled. Plus, if by Saturday evening you're feeling well-prepared for that Monday test, Saturday night will be awesome.

-Don't ask someone what major they're in, especially if you're hitting on him/her Everyone gets asked that, ask them about home, ask the what they're roommate is like, make them think, you wanna be different when you meet people. College isn't always about academics.

-Be healthy. College dining rooms are the worst for food-- everything's fried --and you're likely to get swamped, so make time to go to the gym, go for a run, even go for a walk. And be mentally healthy, as well-- parties are for celebrating your successes, not drowning your sorrows. This is really important.

-Take classes you're interested in. If you're interested in the class, you'll study harder, learn more, and may even find out what you want to do with your life one day. The point of college is to understand yourself better, to understand your role in the world, and make it happen.

-Ask professors for research projects. Ask them for assistant opportunities and other jobs. When the first one says no, ask the next three, four, five, or ten until one says yes. Try getting on in the Communications department, it's broad enough where they will take kids from many different majors and they're open to freshmen. Try to get grants. Use Federal Work Study to your advantage.

-Walk to class, don't drive. It's good for your mind, it'll help you stay in shape, and you'll get some face time with other pedestrians. These little sessions of chit-chat will start to come in handy in terms of meeting people and making connections-- you'd be surprised. Never take any interaction at college for granted.

-Who do you want to be? You're about to be redefined, now is your chance to think about how people will feel when they hear your name.
