πŸ–₯️ That old computer or server might seem fine on the surface, but if it is no longer receiving security updates, it is not fine. It is an open door.

Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. Windows Server 2012 has been unsupported since 2023. Devices still running either are permanently exposed with no patch coming, no matter how well they seem to be working day to day.

Technology has a lifespan, and waiting until something breaks is almost always the most expensive way to find the end of it.

If you are not sure what is still supported in your environment, that is worth finding out before it becomes urgent.

Here's something worth remembering during Cybersecurity Awareness Month! πŸ”

**Having access to cybersecurity awareness training doesn't make your business more secure. Actually DOING the training does!**

It's easy to check the box and say your team has a security awareness training program. But if no one is participating, what's really changing? How do you respond if an insurance company or compliance assessor asks "Is your team trained?"

The goal isn't just to check a box. It's to create a culture of security awareness where everyone on your team knows how to recognize threats, ask questions, and make smarter security decisions.

And it doesn't have to be complicated. A few minutes of training each week, regular conversations about security, and even a little friendly competition can go a long way.

**At your next team meeting, ask a simple question: Are we actually doing the training?**

Because cybersecurity awareness isn't something you buy. It's something you practice.

Whether it is an unexpected invoice, a password reset, or a message that looks like it came from your CEO, the goal of a phishing attempt is always the same. Get you to act before you have time to think.

Before you click anything, ask yourself three things. Did I expect this? Does something feel slightly off? Can I verify this through a separate channel?

Speed is what attackers are counting on. Verification is what stops them.

Something we hear more than you would think when we start working with a new client in greater Boston is some version of the same thing: "We assumed someone took care of that."

Assumed the former employee accounts were deactivated, assumed the old devices were wiped, assumed someone was watching the backup and assumed the software was up to date. Assumption is not a security strategy but it is an incredibly common one and most businesses do not find out how common until something forces the issue.

Here is the line worth sitting with this month: the gaps that cause the most damage are almost never the ones anyone was worried about. They are the quiet ones that nobody thought to check because everything seemed fine.

If you have not taken a proper look at your setup recently, Cybersecurity Awareness Month is as good a reason as any to start. We put together a cybersecurity checklist specifically for small businesses in greater Boston that walks through eight areas worth checking honestly. Link in the comments. πŸ‘‡

πŸ’‘ When an employee leaves, revoking their access is not always the first thing on anyone's mind. But it should be.

Disabled accounts, removed file access, returned devices, and reviewed admin privileges are not just good housekeeping. They are a basic security requirement that a surprising number of small businesses in greater Boston have never done a proper audit on.

One overlooked account from a former employee is all it takes to create a serious exposure. If you have never sat down and looked at who currently has access to your systems, this month is a good time to find out. βœ…

We can help with that conversation. Reach out, and we will take a look together.

Most updates are not about new features. They exist because a security vulnerability was found and needed to be patched before someone exploited it.

Every time someone clicks "Remind me later", that gap stays open. Attackers actively look for unpatched devices because they know how many people keep postponing.

Turn on automatic updates, and when a manual one appears, install it the same day.
