Ever stop to count how many apps you use just to get through your morning coffee? ☕️💻

Most business owners think they’re running about 30 or 40 apps. But here’s a shocker: the average mid-sized business is actually using closer to 290! 🤯

This is what we call "SaaS Sprawl": those hidden subscriptions and "Shadow IT" tools that slip through the cracks. While they might help your team move faster, they can also be a silent budget killer and a major security risk.

The good news? Taking back control doesn't mean slowing down. A simple audit can help you cut duplicate costs and close those security "side doors."

Check out our latest blog for a few easy steps to rein in the app avalanche and protect your bottom line! 👇

On this day in 1990, the Hubble Space Telescope sent back its first images. They were a bit blurry: sort of like your IT security without a plan! 🔭

Speaking of seeing clearly: hackers don’t "break in" with crowbars anymore; they just log in with stolen credentials. That's why Microsoft Entra ID is your business's "Digital Front Door."

It acts as a Digital Command Center, using Single Sign-On (SSO) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to ensure the right people get in and the bad actors stay out. It’s about giving your team a smooth experience while keeping your data locked down tight.

Why did the computer show up late to work? Because it had a hard drive! 😂

Thinking your nightly backup is a full "Disaster Recovery Plan" is like thinking owning a life vest is the same as knowing how to swim. One keeps you floating, but the other actually gets you back to dry land!

Fun bit of tech history for you: On this day in 1913, Igor Sikorsky took flight in the world’s first four-engine aircraft. Talk about redundancy! If one engine failed, he had three more. Does your business have that same level of "backup" for your data? 🛩️

We see it all the time with SMBs here in Portland and across New England: people set a backup and forget it. But if you haven't tested that recovery process, you don't have a plan; you have a wish.

Quick joke for the road: Why did the computer show up late for work? It had a hard drive! (I'll stick to IT, clearly).

Don’t wait for the blue screen of death to realize your plan is missing a few steps. Check out the 7 mistakes you’re probably making (and how to fix them) here: https://peaktechnologyco.com/disaster-recovery-plan-mistakes/

Ever feel like your to-do list is growing faster than the line at a Portland lobster shack on a Saturday? 🦞

On this day back in 1998, Steve Jobs introduced the first iMac. It was all about making tech simpler for the rest of us. Fast forward to today, and we’ve got something even cooler: Microsoft Copilot.

Think of it as your new digital sidekick that doesn’t steal your lunch from the breakroom fridge. Whether you’re trying to summarize a massive email thread that’s gone off the rails or you need a head start drafting a proposal, Copilot is a total lifesaver for us busy business owners here in Maine and New Hampshire.

Quick joke for you: Why did the AI cross the road? To find the most efficient route to the other side! (Okay, I’ll stick to IT services).

If you want to stop drowning in admin work and start actually growing your business, check out our guide on how to make the most of Copilot.

Hey Maine and New Hampshire business owners! 👋

Cybersecurity doesn't have to be a headache. One of the simplest tips? Keep your software updated: those pesky 'update' notifications are actually your first line of defense against hackers! 🛡️

Fun bit of tech history for today: Back on this day in 1952, IBM announced the 701, their first commercial scientific computer. It was a massive machine that filled a whole room, yet it had less computing power than the smart watch on your wrist! We've come a long way since then, but staying secure is still just as important as it was in the room-sized computer days.

Quick one for you: Why don't hackers like the outdoors?

Too many bugs. 🐛

Stay safe out there, New England!

Hey everyone, Dan here. Did you know that on this day in 1993, the Mosaic web browser was officially released? It was the spark that turned the internet into something we could actually use. Talk about a major milestone!

Speaking of big shifts, I’ve been talking to a lot of you across Maine and New Hampshire about AI lately. I know it sounds like sci-fi, but for local businesses, it’s actually a total lifesaver. You don’t need a robot army to see the benefits; you just need a way to reclaim your time.

Quick tip: Try using AI tools to handle the "busy work" like summarizing long meeting transcripts or drafting those basic, repetitive email responses. It keeps you out of the weeds and lets you focus on your actual customers.

Why did the AI cross the road? To optimize the path to the nearest server... and because it heard there was better fiber on the other side. (I’ll stick to IT and leave the comedy to the professionals).

On this day back in 1977, the Apple II was first introduced to the world at the West Coast Computer Faire. Man, I wish I’d kept mine, probably worth a fortune now! 🍏

Speaking of tech evolutions, we recently helped a local shop here in New England get their digital act together. Their Wi-Fi was so slow that customers were actually leaving before their payments even processed. Talk about a retail nightmare.

Here’s a quick pro-tip for all my fellow business owners: Please, for the love of everything digital, keep your guest Wi-Fi and your POS system on separate networks. Not only does it keep your transactions snappy, but it stops a random customer's phone from potentially seeing your credit card data. Security first, folks!

Why did the router get kicked out of the party? It was being too broadcastive. (Okay, that one was bad, I'll stick to IT support.)

If your shop’s network feels like it's stuck in 1977, check out how modern networking can actually help your business grow: https://peaktechnologyco.com/small-business-network-upgrade/

Hey New England! Dan here from Peak Technology Consulting.

Did you know that on this day in 1977, the Apple II was first introduced? It’s wild to think how far we’ve come from those beige boxes to the cloud. Speaking of boxes, let’s talk about your budget.

Why did the IT manager get kicked out of the bank? Because he kept trying to "optimize" his savings by deleting the teller’s desktop shortcuts! (Don’t worry, we don’t do that).

In all seriousness, keeping costs down doesn't mean cutting corners on quality. A quick win for small businesses in Maine and beyond? Audit your subscriptions. It’s incredibly easy to keep paying for "Pro" accounts for people who aren't with the company anymore or tools that just gather digital dust. Switching to scalable cloud tools can also ditch those surprise hardware repair bills.

Did you know that on this day in 1959, the committee that created COBOL first met? Talk about a "legacy" system!

If your office still has that one room that sounds like a jet engine and feels like a walk-in freezer, it might be time for an upgrade. We recently helped a local business move over 500,000 files from their clunky old server straight into the cloud.

The biggest game-changer? Collaboration. No more "file is locked by another user" notifications or struggling with a sluggish VPN. Now, the team can co-author documents in real-time from Portland to Portsmouth without breaking a sweat. Plus, you get that storage closet back for something useful, like a really quiet nap pod.

Why did the cloud stay home from work? Because it was feeling a little under the weather. (Sorry, I had to).

Check out the full story of how we handled the migration here: https://peaktechnologyco.com/from-legacy-servers-to-the-cloud-how-one-business-migrated-500000-files-for-better-collaboration/
