It's a matter of patient safety, quality care, workflow efficiency and care equality; Patient-centered care is challenging to implement when patients have special language needs, such as those with limited English proficiency (LEP). Patients with LEP suffer more adverse events than their English-speaking counterparts. The deployment of Language Access Services continues to be underutilized, disruptive to nursing workflow, time-consuming and delays patient care.
Barriers to effective communication with LEP patients also include lack of resources (flashcards, interpreters, and telephonic/video interpreters) and those resources not being readily available, and consequently ineffective when implemented.

International Translation Day was celebrated a few days ago on September 30th. The following episode of Freakonomics "What Would Be the Best Universal Language?" discusses from a variety of perspectives core language aspects. Taking a look at major languages as we know them, artificially created languages, coding languages and communication in different contexts.

How do you find Language Access initiatives in your school district?
We celebrate Santa Barbara's Unified School District initiative!!!
Spanish translation and interpretation services are available. The district’s Language Access Unit ensures families who are limited or non-English proficient have equal access to information and services provided by SBUSD staff.
“We will have interpreters available if the parent prefers to hear the presentation in Spanish,” Mora said.

The developments point toward a future health care universe where patients don’t revolve around different health care solutions, but where the services themselves orbit around the patient. This includes the delivery of medical care treatment and information in the patient´s preferred language.

"As a son of immigrants and a second generation Taiwanese American, Dr. Chen recognizes the importance of language access, and he continues to develop more fluency in Taiwanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish to better serve our communities. Dr. Chen grew up watching his immigrant parents and extended family struggle to navigate life in this new setting.
