Being an entrepreneur gives you freedom for the things you love.

When people talk about entrepreneurship, the focus is often on growth or big milestones.

But one of the things I appreciate most after years of building my business is freedom over my time.

Not overnight freedom.

The kind that comes from years of steady work, one client and one project at a time.

It’s what now allows me to take meaningful trips, spend time with family, and build a career that fits the life I want to live.

I think there’s a lot of pressure today to make success happen quickly. But so much of a meaningful career is built gradually, through relationships and continuing to show up for the work.

This is what I find most meaningful about choosing this career path for myself.

Five Ways a Chapter Opener Shapes the Reading Experience

The first page of a chapter begins communicating before the reader absorbs a single sentence.

A thoughtfully designed chapter opener does more than mark the beginning of a new section. It helps shape the reader’s experience in several important ways.

1. It creates visual rhythm.
Consistent chapter openings give the book a sense of structure and pacing as the reader moves from one section to the next.

2. It establishes hierarchy.
The size, placement, and style of the chapter number, title, subtitle, and opening text help guide the reader through the page.

3. It sets the tone.
An understated layout may feel calm and refined, while decorative details can create a more expressive or distinctive mood.

4. It provides a sense of transition.
A chapter opener gives the reader a natural pause before entering a new idea or stage of the book.

5. It creates continuity with the overall design.
Typography, spacing, and decorative elements can connect the interior to the cover and help the entire book feel cohesive.

What Belongs in the Front Matter of a Book?

Your manuscript may begin with Chapter One, but your finished book probably shouldn’t.

The pages that come before the main text help orient the reader, establish important publishing information, and create a polished beginning to the book.

Common front-matter elements may include:

• Half-title and title pages
• Copyright page
• Dedication
• Table of Contents
• Foreword
• Preface
• Introduction
• Acknowledgments

That does not mean every book needs every one of these pages.

The right front matter depends on the type of book, the information readers need before they begin, and the overall reading experience you want to create.

For example, a practical nonfiction book may benefit from a detailed table of contents and introduction, while a memoir may begin more simply. A foreword, preface, and introduction also serve different purposes, so they should not be included simply because they seem expected.

Thoughtful front matter helps the book feel complete, intentional, and easy to navigate before the reader ever reaches Chapter One.

A beautiful book is rarely the work of one person.

Behind many strong self-published books, there is often a small circle of thoughtful professionals helping the author bring the work into form.

Editors who help clarify the writing. Copyeditors and proofreaders who protect the reading experience. Book coaches who help authors stay grounded through the process. And illustrators and audiobook producers who each bring a different kind of care to the finished book.

I think this is one of the loveliest parts of self-publishing. Authors do not have to create in isolation.

A good book often grows through collaboration. Through people who respect the author’s vision and bring their own expertise to help it become stronger, clearer, and more complete.

Every part of the process matters.

And every thoughtful professional who helps an author move from idea to finished book deserves recognition.

I recently returned from a trip to the Everglades, and one of the most unexpected gifts of the experience was how completely disconnected we were from our phones for long stretches of time.

At first, it felt constricting.

Then it felt freeing.

Without the constant pull of notifications and updates, it became easier to slow down, pay attention, and fully experience the beauty of the environment around us.

As someone who cares deeply about sustainability and the natural world, it was also a meaningful reminder that nature restores more than just landscapes. It restores perspective, creativity, and a sense of calm that can easily get lost in the noise of everyday life.

Stepping away for a while reminded me how important it is to create space for reflection and real presence.

Sometimes disconnecting is exactly what allows us to reconnect.
