Microsoft lays off over 9,000 workers while requesting over than 14,000 more H-1B foreign workers this year -
Microsoft announced its latest round of layoffs on July 2, cutting about 9,000 workers.
This follows earlier cuts in 2025, including 6,000 jobs in May and an additional 300 in June, totaling over 10,000 layoffs this year.
Previous layoffs include 10,000 in 2023 and nearly 18,000 in 2014.
The company says they are making organizational changes to streamline operations, and say AI is making the company more efficient - which results in less employees needed.
The CEO of Microsoft - Satya Nadella who was born in India - adding that 20-30% of the company’s code is now AI-generated.
Meanwhile Microsoft has requested 14,181 H-1B visas in 2025, with many of these applications filed by Q2 (through June).
Specifically, between May and June Microsoft submitted 6,327 for software engineer roles in Washington state, during the same time period when 2,300 workers, including 817 software engineers, were laid off in that region.
The total 14,181 figure suggests a bigger move across numerous states, with some sources saying the company formed a partnership with Indian firm Integreon Managed Solutions to fill the positions.
Critics argue it's a strategy to replace American workers with lower-cost foreign labor, especially from India, where Microsoft has expanded operations
