Microsoft just killed free Copilot Deep Research.

As of August 18, 2026, the in-depth research tool that turned a prompt into a long, sourced report moved behind the paid Microsoft 365 Premium tier — about $19.99 a month. Free chat and image generation are still there. The deep research piece is not.

Microsoft also merged the consumer Copilot app and the business Copilot app into one, retiring Group Chat, AI Podcasts, and a few other experiments along the way.

Three things to know if your team uses Copilot:

Free Copilot still does everyday work — answering questions, drafting, summarizing what you paste in. It did not disappear.
The deep-research capability that produced longer, sourced reports now needs a paid Microsoft 365 plan. If someone on your team relied on it, that workflow changed this week.

Copilot is useless on a messy tenant. Broken permissions, orphaned files, no adoption plan — that’s how you end up with expensive shelfware. Buying the feature is the easy part. Making your stack worth putting it on is the real work.(1/5)
