Big catalog deal in country music: Sony Music Publishing Nashville and Domain Capital Group acquired Miranda Lambert's complete song catalog, including all her hits and a deal for future works.

The catalog includes "White Liar," "Bluebird," "Over You," and albums like "Platinum" and "Kerosene." It also covers songs Lambert wrote for other artists like Morgan Wallen's "Thought You Should Know" and Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas."

This is another Sony and Domain partnership. They previously bought Ashley Gorley's catalog for around $40 million in 2022. Domain has closed over $700 million in funding for music, film, and TV catalog investments.

Lambert's catalog will inspire an upcoming Hulu project developed by Sony Pictures Television. The deal extends Sony's partnership with Lambert that started back in 2003.

Big pushback from artist representatives: A coalition just launched "Say No to Suno," calling the AI music generator a "brazen smash and grab" that uses artists' work without authorization to train its system.

The open letter argues that "AI slop dilutes the royalty pools of legitimate artists from whose music this slop is derived." It's signed by major figures including Ron Gubitz of Music Artist Coalition and Helienne Lindvall of European Composer and Songwriter Alliance.

Here's the scale: Deezer says about 60,000 AI-generated tracks are uploaded daily, making up 39% of all music delivered to the platform. And 85% of streams on AI music were fraudulent in 2025.
Suno is still fighting copyright lawsuits with Universal and Sony, but recently raised $250 million at a $2.45 billion valuation.

A2IM is hosting "The MLC Explained: A Guide for A2IM Members" on April 9 at 1pm EST.

Dae Bogan, Head of Third-Party Partnerships at The MLC, will break down how The MLC collects and distributes U.S. mechanical streaming royalties, what independent labels and distributors need to know about proper catalog registration, and how The MLC fits into the broader royalty ecosystem alongside PROs and SoundExchange.

This session is for independent labels, distributors, and music companies navigating the U.S. streaming landscape. Understanding how mechanical royalties work matters for supporting your creators and ensuring catalogs are properly monetized.

For A2IM members managing independent music catalogs, this explains how mechanical streaming royalties flow and what you can do to help maximize earnings for your creators through proper MLC registration.

You, as a modern music professional, are more than a creative. You're a business owner. Managing your U.S. publishing rights shouldn't cost you a percentage of your earnings. Keep 100% of your royalties where they belong: with you. Administered, by YOU.

SoundExchange has distributed over $13 billion in digital performance royalties since 2003.

Digital performance royalties are generated when recordings play on digital radio (Pandora, SiriusXM), non-interactive streaming services, and other statutory platforms. SoundExchange collects and distributes these royalties to recording owners and featured artists in the U.S.

$13 billion is the cumulative total paid out over 23 years to those registered with SoundExchange. This demonstrates the scale of digital performance royalties and why registration matters. That money only went to artists, labels, and rights holders who were registered when payments were processed.

For anyone managing recording rights, this milestone reinforces why SoundExchange registration is foundational. Digital performance royalties represent substantial income, but only if you're registered to receive it. Unregistered recordings generate royalties that sit unclaimed.

The $13 billion figure shows what happens when registration works correctly. It also shows what's at stake when registration is missing. This is real money that reached rightsholders because they completed the registration process. SoundExchange

Most music administration platforms don't publish their support numbers. We do, every quarter.

Q1 2026 results: our median first response time was 2 hours and 4 minutes. Median time to close was 16 hours and 29 minutes. Overall CSAT score: 100%.

On the registration side, works were processed in an average of 2 days. ISWC assignments averaged 33 days this quarter due to a processing delay at one of our partner societies. That issue has been identified and resolved.

We believe independent music professionals deserve a platform that performs and proves it. Administered, by YOU.

Good news for independent songwriters: Bandcamp just added publishing rights fields to its upload pages.

You can now add songwriter/composer names, publisher info, and ISWC identifiers (International Standard Musical Work Code) directly to your track metadata. The ISWC is basically a digital fingerprint for your composition that collection societies recognize globally.

This matters because missing metadata leads to "black box" royalties, where money is earned but never paid out because the rights holder can't be identified.

Bandcamp released a free guide on publishing rights and royalties, and you can use their bulk-edit tools to add this info to your existing catalog.

If you're self-releasing music, making sure this metadata is accurate from the start means you're actually positioned to collect the royalties you're owed.
